Five soldiers from the 4 Parachute Regiments – those belonging to Special Forces who had carried out cross-border strikes in the past – neutralized the entire batch before surrendering to injuries in the near quarter. fight which happened on Saturday.
Details about the operation, in which five terrorists were killed, had begun to drip even when the wounded soldier was taken to a military hospital, but could not be saved. Special forces, which had fallen in the air near the LoC after information about the intruders were received, were found only six feet away from the terrorists, which they wiped out in fierce fighting when search teams found them.
Sources said that the battlefield contained signs of close combat, with one of the soldiers found right next to the body of a terrorist he had lost. Two soldiers, who were flown to the nearest military hospital, were killed, while three others were killed in the battle zone.
The operation began after the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle took pictures of the infiltration effort in the Tap sector. Special forces were moved on Saturday to intercept them because thick snow and harsh winters had limited the spread of regular army units going forward.
Two elite unit units were deployed to find and bring down intruders but the operation was carried out under heavy snow which hampered visibility. Sources said that the force, led by Subedar Sanjeev Kumar, saw the terrorists’ footprints in the snow and followed in the footsteps.
At one point, the snow beneath their feet gave way and three members of the army entered the nallah (frozen mountain stream) and landed right above the terrorists hiding there. In the ensuing battle at close range, where the terrorists benefit because they have been waiting, the troops manage to fight to the death.
Seeing their comrades under a big fire, two soldiers who managed to avoid the falling snow also rushed into the battle zone and, together, they succeeded in bringing down a whole batch of five terrorists who had infiltrated.
“The soldiers and terrorists were found not far from each other when the other troops reached that position. The soldiers put up strong resistance even after stumbling and members of the army rushed to help, “the source told ET.
Another source added that the hand-to-hand battle involving the five soldiers was very unusual because most of the meetings took place from a distance.
Other squad members who pay the highest sacrifice are Havildar Davendra Singh and Paratroopers Bal Krishan, Amit Kumar and Chhatrapal Singh.
