PM Imran was dragged into the baseless PTV, the case of the parliamentary attack, said ATC lawyers
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Defense lawyers on Monday had told the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan was dragged into the baseless case of the Pakistan Parliament and Television Company (PTV) attack.
During the trial, the lawyer said that no one had recorded the testimony against the prime minister, therefore he should be released from the case.
Earlier, ATC had said that the decision to release Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan in the case of assault to Parliament would be announced on 29 October.
PM Khan gets permanent exemption from appearances
The ATC has granted Prime Minister Imran Khan permanent exemption from appearing in the case related to the attack on the Houses of Parliament.
Judge Syed Kausar Abbas Zaidi heard the petition for release submitted by the prime minister. Babar Awan’s lawyer confirmed that the defendant could get permanent release if there were more than one suspect in the case.
It is stated here that PM Khan, President Dr Arif Alvi, Asad Umar, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Shafqat Mehmood and Raja Khurram Nawaz are facing trial for allegedly attacking the PTV building and the Parliament Building during the 2014 sit-in.
The clash resulted in the death of three sit-in participants. Hundreds, including demonstrators and police officers, were also injured.
After that, the police have enacted the Anti-Terrorism Law (ATA) against the people responsible.
The President is working on constitutional immunity in this case. According to Article 248 (2) of the Constitution, “No criminal proceedings shall be carried out or continued against the President or Governor in any court during his term of office.”
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Minister of Finance Asad Umar also applied for acquittal in court citing official involvement. Similar petitions were filed by other PTI leaders including Jahangir Tareen, Aijaz Chaudhry, Shafqat Mehmood and Saifullah.
