The protest took place in the background of lack of safety equipment in the country, coupled with the case of 13 doctors who had been diagnosed with the Chinese virus. In March, a doctor and a nurse reportedly died being tested positive for the Chinese virus. The president of the Physicians Association in Quetta, Yasir Achakzai, revealed how the Pakistani government violated official World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines intended to protect doctors and other medical staff.
Provincial government spokesman Liaqat Shehwani, however, stated, “We have assured them that the PPE will be given soon but they are starting to protest.” According to the Ministry of Health, Wuhan Coronavirus has infected 3,277 people and claimed 50 lives so far in Pakistan.
Previously, a series of videos posted by Pakistanis quarantined in the Taftan camp on the border with Iran had spread showing dirty and overcrowded camps. Videos circulating on social media show people sleeping on the floor and in corridors and packed into tents set up in dirty yards. In addition, the Pakistani government did not make an effort to separate sick pilgrims from healthy ones.
