KARACHI: It’s still almost six months away. The ICC Twenty20 World Cup is scheduled to begin in Australia on 18 October but due to the Covid-19 pandemic there are serious doubts over the event.
But Australians don’t care.
Despite the fact that the event will take place for many more months and worried that it might have to be postponed, the hosts have already “almost finished” their squad for this year’s biggest cricket show.
According to the chairman of Australia’s selectors, Trevor Hohns, the national team has taken concrete form with the exception of the ‘last one or two positions’.
Australians have enjoyed a glorious journey in the T20I format recently. They have won nine of the last 10 T20I completed in series against India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa.
The consequence of such a strong performance is that, although international cricket is currently being detained due to a coronavirus pandemic, the squad is more or less resolved.
‘The last one or two positions always give us a normal headache. Especially when you get a sedentary line-up that has performed very well for the past 12 months, “Hohns said.
“We will be very close (to finish the squad). If we have to, we might be able to nominate it now.”
Cricket Australia has announced a central contract for the 2020-21 season.
The Australian Test and ODI team has benefited from the rise of Marnus Labuschagne in recent months, but he has not had the opportunity to prove his ability in the shortest format.
Will the host be tempted to play it at the T20 World Cup? Hohns indicated that Australia kept their options open, but did not tend to rush 25 years into T20I clothing.
“We don’t want to go too far with him. He worked very hard, he is now playing Test cricket and cricket one day,” Hohns said. “It happened in a short amount of time. T20 cricket.
“Right now it’s in court and we have a good T20 team or squad … they are the ones we will focus on, waiting for the World Cup,” he said. —With input from the agency
