There are six district municipal companies in Karachi. Almost all of them claimed that they had disinfected their respective districts.

Following are the steps taken by this DMC to reduce the risk of coronavirus spread.

Central District

This is the largest district in Karachi which has a population of around 3.5 million. It has 51 union councils.

DMC Center Chairman Rehan Hashmi told SAMAA Digital that they have covered half of the total union council in terms of disinfection of pedestrian roads, roads and bridges.

Disinfectants contain different antiseptics, including Chemgene, Deltanar, Verocid, Dettol and chlorine.

“We smoke through tankers and bowsers outside mosques, parks, hospitals, pharmacies and residential areas every day,” Hashmi said.

The head of the Central DMC said the district’s population was 3.5 million as of the last census, but nearly jumped to 5 million.

He said the federal and provincial governments did not provide funds and equipment for the Central DMC to address the situation.

Hashmi said sanitation staff and their city work 16 to 18 hours every day. “DMC Central will complete the disinfection of all union councils next week,” he added.

The Chair of the West DMC said the company had formed a task force that would work in case of an emergency.
