LAHORE: At least 50 prisoners in a prison in Jakarta PakistanThe province of Punjab was most severely tested coronavirus positive, an official said on Tuesday.
“The total number of prisoners infected with coronavirus in Punjab has reached 50 so far. About 525 prisoners have been quarantined in separate cells of the province,” Prison Inspector General Shahid Baig told PTI.
He said around 20 cases had been reported in the Lahore camp prison and the rest in other cases.
Baig said the outbreak came from a Pakistani who was arrested for drug smuggling in Italy and was handed over to Pakistan last month. He was diagnosed on March 23.
“He was detained in the Lahore camp prison where he had infected several other people. As soon as he was positive, we immediately quarantined him and others who were suspected to be corona inmates,” he said.
Authorities have moved around 800 prisoners from prison camps to other prisons in Punjab, he added.
The official said the interior ministry also banned visiting relatives of detainees in all 41 prisons in Punjab.
Meanwhile, the amount Tablighi Jamaat infected members on Tuesday jumped to 540 in the Punjab province.
According to officials, around 400 preachers quarantined at Raiwind Tablighi Markaz (headquarters) tested positive for the corona virus.
“A total of 540 members of the Tablighi Jamaat have been infected throughout Punjab so far,” a Punjab health department official said.
Likewise, the total number of infected Shiite pilgrims who arrived in Punjab from Iran last month reached 577. They were quarantined in the Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Faisalabad districts in Punjab.
On Tuesday, the total number of COVID-19 cases increased to 4,000 with 54 deaths. Punjab has more cases (2,000) than any other province in the country.
