New Delhi: Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the leading foot spinners in the cricket world but he can be more effective with better use of folds, said former Pakistani spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.
Ahmed, who has trained around the world and is currently a consultant for his home team, said India’s ability to take goal in mid-overs in an over-overs format through Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav has become a game changer for them.
Both wrist-spinners were brought into India’s limited setting after the 2017 Champions Trophy. Although, lately, both Chahal and Kuldeep have not played together.
“Chahal is a very good bowler but can use folds better. He can widen folds. You have to be smart enough to understand the tone. If it’s a flat tone, you can bowl stumps stumps,” Ahmed, one of the best foot spinners produced by Pakistan , telling you PTI.
“If the ball is gripping, you can widen from the wrinkles because you can trouble even the best of the batsmen with that angle. That way your googly doesn’t change as much as the batsman hopes and you end up taking the goal.”
Chahal has taken 91 wickets in 52 ODI at 25.83 and 55 wickets at 42 T20 at 24.34. He is not a very large ball modifier but uses his variations very effectively.
Ahmed also felt that people like Chahal and Kuldeep benefited greatly from the advice of ex-captain MS Dhoni from behind a tree stump.
“You must be one step ahead of the batsman. You must know your field position is in accordance with the strength of the batsman. I always say attacks with fielders, not with the ball. If you understand the theory, you will always succeed,” 49 years old, who played 52 Tests and 144 ODI, said.
“India has become a force to be reckoned with in all three formats because it uses bowlers so well. Dhoni is an expert at getting the best out of his bowlers in overs-overs cricket and now you have Virat Kohli.”
Ahmed chose Chahal, Adam Zampa from Australia and Shadab Khan from Pakistan among the top foot spinners in white ball cricket. He also said the art of leg rotation remained more relevant than ever.
“You need foot spinners and mystery spinners on your team because they have the ability to take goal at every stage of the game. I see many of them coming in the next 10-15 years.
“Most batsmen now like to play express speed but with good foot spinners in the team, you are always in the game,” added a member of the 1992 World Cup winning squad.
