PESHAWAR: Jang / Geo Group workers continued protest on the 56th day in a row against the arrest of their Editor in Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman here on Saturday.
Carrying banners and placards bearing slogans in support of their demands, the protesters urged the government to immediately release Mir Shakil and withdraw the cases against it.
The Pakistan-Nawaz Muslim League (PML-N) delegation led by Khalil Khattak visited the camp to express solidarity with workers who protested and promised to support them in each forum.
Condemning the arrest of Mir Shakil in a three-decade-old property case, PML-N leader Khalil Khattak said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had become a means of victimization in the hands of PTI authorities. Instead of holding the responsibility of the corruptors, he said the NAB was harassing opposition leaders and media houses to suppress their voices.
He said irresponsible rulers would not succeed in their mission to conquer the independent media, saying such efforts had been made in the past too.
He said Jang / Geo Group was being convicted for highlighting the truth and called Mir Shakil’s arrest an attack on the media and press freedom. He said the PML-N would support them in every forum and oppose the dictatorial policies of the authorities.
Resident Daily Editor Jang Peshawar Arshad Aziz Malik and senior Shakeel journalist Farman Ali demanded immediate release of Mir Shakil, withdrawing the case against him. They vowed to continue the movement until the acceptance of their demands.
