Pakistan will begin manufacturing Covid-19 treatment drugs: Dr. Zafar

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for National Health Services Dr. Zafar Mirza said on Friday that Pakistan would soon start making a drug breakthrough drug Covid-19 Remdesivir under license from the US pharmaceutical company Gilead.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, he said a Pakistani pharmaceutical company had completed a voluntary licensing agreement with US pharmaceutical company Gilead for the manufacture and sale of Remdesivir.

The Special Assistant said Pakistan is one of five countries where US companies have signed licensing agreements for manufacturing drugs.

He said production of the drug could begin eight weeks after the necessary regulatory approvals were obtained.

Dr Zafar Mirza said the development was an important step forward for Pakistan in the fields of health, economics and diplomacy. He said it helped give our citizens and frontline health workers access to the latest treatments for a pandemic quickly.

He said Pakistan would also be able to export drugs to 127 countries facing the Coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at the occasion, Trade Adviser Abdul Razak Dawood said making local Remdesivir was an important export opportunity for the country’s pharmaceutical sector in a critical period.

He said drug exports to developing countries when needed would also position Pakistan to play the right role on the global public health stage.
