LONDON: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said that free trials are the right of Geo and Jang Editor-in-Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman and justice must be seen to be done in his case.
The federal minister spoke to the Action Committee of Pakistan’s Foreign Journalists (OPJAC) in a virtual meeting arranged by Convener Azhar Javaid and senior journalist Farid Qureshi. Journalists from England and Europe attended the briefing by Fawad Chaudhry.
When asked the question about the ongoing detention of MSR for more than two months after being illegally arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Fawad Chaudhry said that “Justice should not only be done but must be seen to be done” in the case of MSR who was in custody in the case the purchase of 34-year-old private land and whose detention has invited international outrage.
Fawad Chaudhry praised the media houses of Jang and Geo for their extraordinary, positive, strong and historic role in serving Pakistan.
Fawad Chaudhry said that Jang Group’s contribution to Pakistan reached more than 70 years. “Starting from Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman to MSR to Mir Ibrahim Rehman, they have played a major role. Such groups are not overnight and have a strong history. Free trials are a fundamental right of MSR. No one must be saved from an investigation or trial because of its weight and value, but at the same time, justice must be done. I hope MSR gets a free trial and all the prerequisites for the trial are met. “
Fawad Chaudhry fully supports the call of Federal Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan for Prime Minister Imran Khan’s assistant and special adviser to declare assets, nationalities, and conflicts of interest in Pakistan and abroad. Ghulam Sarwar Khan told reporter Adil Shahzeb in an interview that there were aliens sitting in PM Imran Khan’s cabinet and their origins and reality were unknown.
Fawad Chaudhry told British Pakistani journalists: “I agree with Ghulam Sarwar Khan. The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) and advisor must state their assets and interests. Only elected representatives can make decisions, not advisors and assistants. This is a legal requirement. This is what Imran Khan asked when he was in opposition and asked PTI leaders to make a declaration. “
The federal minister said, “The opinion of experts must be part of the government and the concept and role of special advisers and assistants is important but they must not make decisions because they are not accountable to voters and will not lose or get anything in the ballot box. Elected representatives declare their assets and are held accountable by the media and the law. “
