Not impressed with Babar Azam’s first press conference after being appointed as leader of the Green Army in a limited format, former Pakistani cricket players Shoaib Akhtar and Rashid Latif have criticized the main batsman for ‘giving the headlines’ about language barriers and weighing in comparison with Indian captain Virat Kohli. Azam was recently asked to improve his speech skills and English personality by former cricketer Tanvir Ahmed after the next big Pakistani event was appointed as the successor to Sarfaraz Ahmed in a 50-plus format.
Although his main role is to focus on beatings for Pakistan, the newly appointed Green Army captain in a recent media interaction said that he also worked to polish his speech skills. The Pakistan captain also stepped on the Kohli versus Azam debate and argued that the two batsmen were different players. Slamming Azam for mentioning language barriers, former Pakistani captain Latif said that Pakistani batsmen lacked vision in his meetings with reporters.
Our captain gives the main news about language barriers: Latif
“When the captain was sitting at the press conference, he gave insight into his vision but this was clearly lacking,” Latif said. “Our captain gives headlines about language barriers and things we already know, such as comparisons with Virat Kohli,” Latif was quoted as saying by Pakistan Cricket. “Babar should make a strong statement rather than just following the script given to him. You have shown that your attitude and mental approach are not as expected, “he added.
Turning the knife even further, legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar advised Azam to sharpen his communication skills and added that the Pakistani captain should also take note of the former captain and current Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Take a sheet of PM Imran’s book regarding personality: Akhtar
“Babar Azam wants to be a captain like Imran Khan but this does not mean that it will only be related to playing cricket. He needs to take a leaf from PM Imran’s book with regard to personality too, “Akhtar said. Akhtar’s statement came after Azam confirmed that he wanted to be an aggressive leader as Imran had done during his captain’s tenure with the Green Army.
“Please don’t talk about things that we have known from the past 10 years. We will not buy this argument,” he said. “Babar must sharpen his communication skills, his personality, his ability to lead from the front, his level of fitness, etc. I think he has to prove a lot,” Akhtar added.
