Pakistan News: Pakistan’s support for the Taliban aimed at increasing Islamabad’s strategic goals: the Pentagon | Instant News

NEW DELHI: US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has released the latest report outlining PakistanOngoing support for The Taliban and the Haqqani terrorist network.

The Pentagon report, prepared by the Inspector General, in accordance with the assistance of the United States Department of State and International Development Agency, covers the period from January to March from Operation Freedom Sentinel, the US military mission in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan continues to hide the Taliban and related militant groups in Pakistan, such as Pakistan Haqqani Network, which maintains the ability to carry out attacks against Afghan interests, “the report said.

The report also added that Islamabad had been encouraged Afghan Taliban to participate in the peace talks but that it “refrained from applying coercive pressure which would seriously threaten its relations with the Afghan Taliban to prevent the group from further violence.”

This happened when Pakistani leaders had repeatedly assured Washington that they supported peace and stability in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon even stated in its report that Islamabad’s main strategic objective in Afghanistan was to fight its regional archrival, India, and prevent an overflow of instability from neighboring countries.

“Pakistan is likely to view the increasing influence of the Taliban in Afghanistan as supporting its overall aims and will seek to influence the intra-Afghan peace talks in a favorable direction for Pakistan,” the report said.
