ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) next week will discuss a proposal that if the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) calls its leaders on a 20-year case, then they will defend them temporarily away from government at both the Central and Punjab levels, a reliable source told The News here on Tuesday. The source said former prime minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chairman of the Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had decided to hold a party meeting where they would get input from party elders regarding proposals to stay away from the government while facing NAB questions about assets outside meaningful cases. They said PML-Q would not open Pandora’s box but would truly maintain its leadership from all odds, adding “PML-Q would not make a compromise on the honor and reputation of the Chaudhrys family.”
The source said the Chaudhry family believed that there were some elements that slandered them so that if the NAB called them they would take a high moral ground by leaving the coalition government and facing an investigation using all legal forums.
“Prime Minister Imran Khan has promised during his recent meeting with the Minister of Housing and Employment Tariq Bashir Cheema that he will explore the facts about reopening old cases against the Chaudhrys family but PML-Q has so far not been told whether he has taken any steps in this, “said the source.
“Chaudhrys from Gujrat now believes that they have not been given fair treatment despite the fact that their party fully supports Pakistan’s coalition government Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) at the federal and provincial levels,” the source said.
The source said Prime Minister Imran Khan always kept his distance from the Chaudhry family and every time he visited Lahore he deliberately avoided meeting with Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.
“Prime Minister Imran Khan also never contacted Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to ask about it. He also refused to include Moonis Elahi in the federal cabinet despite repeated requests from the Chaudhry family, “the source said.
Sources said Prime Minister Imran Khan seemed unhappy over the issuance of Hamza Shahbaz’s production orders by the Chairman of the Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, adding “The meeting between the Chaudhry brothers and Khawaja brothers also added fuel to the fire because it happened at the time when a rift appeared between Prime Minister Imran Khan and close assistant Jahangir Khan Tareen after the submission of a report on the sugar crisis. “
When contacted, PML-Q leader Kamil Ali Agha told The News that there were some elements who wanted to defame PML-Q’s leadership so that if the NAB called their leaders in the old case they could make a ‘big decision’ on this political victimization. .
“We will sit together in the next meeting and take a number of important decisions related to the NAB question towards the Chaudhrys brothers. “Our party will speak out against political victimization through the NAB which has lost its credibility in the eyes of the people,” he said.
Despite repeated efforts by this correspondent in the past few days Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Chaudhry Moonis Elahi were not available for comment.
