Severe for not being nominated for the Arjuna award for the second consecutive year, India Shuttler. H S Prannoy said the players who underachieved him were recommended by the Indian Badminton Association. The Indian Badminton Association (BAI) on Tuesday recommended top doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and male single player Sameer Verma for the coveted award.
Prannoy uses Twitter to express his displeasure. “#Arjunaawards The same old story. People who have the Cwg Medal and Asian Championships are not even recommended by the Association. And people who aren’t at these big events recommend #waah #thiscountryisajoke, “ Prannoy writes.

Of the three recommendations, Satwik-Chirag won silver in 2018 CWG, but Sameer never played in prestigious tournaments. The 25-year-old from Dhar didn’t have a good performance last year. The 2016 Hong Kong Open finalist, however, in hiss form in 2018, won three titles to reach the world best career rank no. 11. His stunning run also earned him a place in the 2018 BWF World Tour Final, where he reached the semi-finals.
BAI said already “Diligently assessing the performance of athletes and coaches over the past four years before sending the names to the Ministry of Sports for recommendations.” In the past four years, Prannoy had a good achievement in 2018 where he won a gold medal as part of a mixed Indian team that won the Commonwealth Games for the first time. He won a bronze medal at the Wuhan Asian Championship and won the world best career ranking number 8 in May 2018.
In 2017, Prannoy defeated former world number one Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia and Olympic champion Chen Long from China in a streak at the Indonesia Open. He also reached the US Open final that same year. At home, he won his first senior national championship title beating World No. 2 Kidambi Srikanth in the final. He was also part of the men’s team that won bronze medals at the Asian Team Championships in 2016 and 2020.
Prannoy received support from former Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap. “Never really understood the awarding system. I hope this changes. Be a strong friend. “ Kashyap tweeted.

Having been ignored for Arjuna last year, Prannoy has questioned the award selection criteria, saying that knowing people who can push for candidacy is more important than a court performance.
“If you want your name on the Awards list, make sure you have people who will put your name on the list. Performance is at least considered in our country. The sad state of our country but can not be helped. Just let go and play until you can, “ he tweeted last year.
