Ben Stokes has promised England captain with the same attacking instincts that made him one of the most exciting players in international cricket.
Stokes is becoming more and more certain to make a temporary action during the first test next week against the West Indies, with regular skipper Joe root is expecting his second child in the coming days.
Usually the root will be back to lead the team at the first opportunity, but given the strict protocols for a series of bio-safe’ bubble, it’ll need to isolate yourself from teammates within one week after his trip to the hospital.
As Vice-captain Stokes ready to step in those circumstances adding to the already crowded list of responsibilities he has as the primary side all rounder and talisman.
And fresh off the back of his unforgettable achievements in 2019, it is not surprising that he plans to take a bold approach.
“Nine slips and a gully, probably,” he said with a smile, when asked what kind of captain he will be.
Although the omission of the gate, perhaps you can descend as for supervision, the principle of attacking cricket is not an exaggeration.
“No matter what I do, in terms of choice of what to do in a situation, he will always be a positive route,” he added.
“I hope that I always try to lead by example in terms of attitude and commitment to what I do. Even if I say that it is not going to change the way that I go about things from the perspective how I want to affect the game that try to have a positive effect with the ball or bat in his hands.”
Stokes cheerfully admits that he was never pegged as a ”future captain of England” – a nickname gifted young Michael Atherton, and later dug back up to match similar sir Alastair cook and root.
Loves Andrew Flintoff and sir Ian Botham, of the same all actions of cloth Stokes, it wasn’t easy, responsible for the conduct of the trial and not popular in school, thought that those who already play an important role in all three disciplines just too much on their plate.
That is, in theory, he is more than happy to challenge, at least in the short term.
“I think the last time I was captain maybe the game Academy against Scotland or something. I don’t remember much because I was 16”, he said.
“I never had a goal to want to be captain, it’s just always been about winning.
“Alastair always destined to be captain of the England team after Andrew Strauss; Joe was always destined to be captain after Alastair cook…if I’m honest, I’m not one of those that people would always associate as a place of England captain. That’s what they all say.
“But obviously, getting the opportunity to captain England is a huge honour. Even if it’s only once you can still say ‘Yes, I was captain of England’. At the same time I know that I only come to take the reins for one game due to personal situation, Joe.”
It is possible that the first Stokes ‘ law in his country, will lead his team in solidarity with the black lives matter movement. In the West Indies will carry the symbol developed by BLM partner Troy deeney is alisha Hosanna on their shirts throughout the series and there have been discussions about how England can show unity with a cause.
“We negotiate ourselves, and we are in discussions with (captain of the West Indies) Jason holder”, – he said.
“It would be great to be able to do something like the national teams of England and the West Indies showing their support together as two different Nations.
“From the point of view, everything is crystal clear, we’re not there yet, but there talking. It’s great that two teams who want to work together to have the opportunity to show support in the lives of blacks are important”.
The area has some tough decisions to make a choice, with a 30-strong training groups a slimmed down squad to be named after three days within the team match will start at Ageas Bowl on Wednesday.
“When the crisis comes to the crunch, I’d really like to have a decent say from the point of view of the end 11, which will go on the field,” added Stokes.
“First game in charge, everything fits, and you can choose only 11…I may not have many friends after this test match.”
