McIlroy lost the world number one position to John RAM last week

Rory McIlroy is back on the field after carding a first round of three-over-par 73 in the WGC Invitational fedex St. Jude in Memphis.

Starting on the back nine, McIlroy made bogeys at the 11th and 14th, over shots in three consecutive holes between the fourth and sixth.

Birdies at the seventh and ninth holes saw him back two shots.

Brooks Koepka leads on eight undertwo ahead of rickie Fowler and Brendon Todd Graeme McDowell two under.

Rounds of 68 from 2019 McDowell and open champion Shane Lowry saw them sitting in the top 15 on the leaderboard after the opening day in Tennessee.

McIlroy found the water on the 11th and by that time, he spent five with three holes to play, he took a share of last place next to Ian Poulter, tied 77th in the 78-man field.

Severoirlandtsev, needing a victory to regain the number one place in the world John RAM, finally got a shot with a birdie three at the 16th hole to get back to four.

He made two birdies in three holes, pulling even one chance to come back on the ninth, the final hole in his round.

Four-time major winner ended one day in 67th position.

McDowell, also on the back nine, made 13 Pars in his opening 14 holes with just one bogey on the height of the four 12th hole, his third.

Open champion 2010 us then made his first birdie on the day of his 15th hole and added another at the next before making it three in a row on the penultimate hole to join Lowry in a share of 15th place.

The world number six Koepka made the best lap of his career with his Round of 62.
