If school can continue on May 1, the Iowa High School Athletics Association and the Iowa Girls Middle School Athletics Association have released plans for a shortened spring sports season.
The tentative schedule released on Monday allows the team to continue training on Friday, May 1st with golf and the track eligible to have a regular season competition starting on May 4thth and soccer on May 8th. Track and Field will have several weeks of meetings ahead of the country’s qualifications on May 28th and declared in Des Moines starting June 4th-6th. Girls golf will start regionally on May 26th with the country on June 8th and 9th while a boy has a session on May 29th and declare it on June 11thth and 12th. The football playoff bleeds deep into the summer with girls starting the postseason on June 4th and declare from June 16th-20th. Children start the June 8 playoffth and finish June 15th-19th.
IHSAA Communications Director Chris Cuellar talked about what went into this plan. “After consulting with coaches, athletic directors, and coach associations, we all decided that something was better than nothing. They understand the time of crisis facing everyone and we are lucky they are willing to be flexible with scheduling. May 1st was a tentative start for us, but this is a reasonable date. Entering June will look different and is a big change, but we hope we can make it happen. “
Until now, this tentative schedule has not changed the start of the summer sports season. Stay connected with KCII Sports for updates.
