(KDKA) – With the spread of coronavirus continuing throughout the United States, some of the medical supplies needed have diminished as healthcare workers struggle to help patients affected by the disease.
In recent weeks, companies connected with the sport have stepped in to start making personal protective equipment (PPE) for these workers. Kiya Tomlin, CEO of Kiya Tomlin Fashion and wife of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, joined the effort.
Tomlin used his time at home to sew washable cloth masks for hospital support staff.
Tomlin and his team donated 300 masks to the Pittsburgh regional hospital and they sewed 500 again last week. Additional hospitals throughout the country have now reached Tomlin about getting masks.
Although the Tomlin mask is not as effective as blocking particles such as the N-95 mask that must be worn by most medical professionals when dealing with patients, he developed a mask that might be able to hold a filter to do so.
“The morning we talked, he found a way to sew a mask with a small pocket open, where someone could put a piece of HEPA filter vacuum bag, or a blue shop towel or whatever material was found. better filter out the particles that can carry the virus. “
Tomlin hopes that someone can develop and produce a filter that can fit into the mask that he has developed.
