The return of the UFC has provided some relief for fans who are thirsty for live sports, and some of the actions that are urgently needed for sportsbooks have been hit since the pandemic coronavirus has killed major sports around the world.
Last Saturday the UFC 249, the first of three eight-day events, brought more action to the Rush Street Interactive platform than any NFL game.
“That was even 33 percent more popular than the return of Conor McGregor to the UFC last January,” said COO Mattias Stetz, whose company operates BetRivers.com and PlaySugarHouse.com.
PointsBet USA and DraftKings both drew a total UFC betting record on Saturday.
DraftKings director of sportsbook operations Johnny Avello stated that the volume for UFC 249 was almost double the company’s previous largest total for UFC events.
PointsBet’s director of communication Patrick Eichner told several websites, “Overall, this UFC 249 card is slightly better than Conor McGregor’s return to the octagonal at UFC 246. Both events have destroyed every other UFC event to date out of the water, with handles comparable to full weekend NBA games. “
William Hill ordered the biggest bet at UFC 249, according to several media. A gambler loses $ 105,000 because Tony Ferguson is favorite with -210 odds. Justin Gaethje won the temporary UFC lightweight title with a technical fifth round knockout.
Bettors had another chance with a Wednesday night card featuring Anthony Smith against Glover Teixeira at the main event.
Smith, UFC’s fourth-grade light heavyweight, was preferred at -190 by PlaySugarHouse and -182 by DraftKings. He hasn’t fought since June because of a broken arm. DraftKings offered him at +100 to win by KO, TKO or disqualified.
40-year-old Teixeira is +155 at PlaySugarHouse and +152 at DraftKings, who offer him at +700 to be won by KO, TKO or DQ. On Tuesday, 81 percent of moneyline splits with total bets on DraftKings were for Smith to win.
The strengths / weaknesses of both sportsbooks for the total rounds in the five rounds that are scheduled are 2.5.
The 11-fight card set a busy night.
The most at stake in PlaySugarHouse after the main event are Ricky Simon (-165) vs. Ray Borg (+130) and Ovince Saint Preux (-139) vs. Ben Rothwell (+115). DraftKings offers the same moneyline opportunity in both battles.
Borg Albuquerque (13-4) has won 2-1 since losing to former flying class champion Demetrious Johnson, losing weight for the third and fourth time in his career during the last time span. Simon from Vancouver, Washington, aged 15-3 but has lost a pair of fights with Urijah Faber and Rob Font in two of his latest shows.
With seven of the last eight UFC fights in Borg, DraftKings offers a fight in -295 for distance and Borg in +1400 to be won by KO, TKO or DQ compared to +550 for the same bet as Simon.
Saint Preux (24-13) from Knoxville, Tenn., Will make his heavyweight debut after 20 light heavyweight fights, but the action is almost evenly distributed in DraftKings. Rothwell (37-12) from Kenosha, Wis., Has received 51 percent of the handle and 46 percent of the total bet.
