The next night, we will sleep for an hour: at 3 a.m., the clock must be set back to 2 a.m. in Switzerland and in many European countries. In some of them, voices were raised to return to this system.
Changes in time at the end of October are often associated with changes in winter time. “But in reality, there is only normal time and summer time,” said the Federal Metrology Institute (METAS) in a press release on Tuesday. Tonight, we return to Standard Time, Central European Time which has been in effect in Switzerland for over 125 years.
Summer time has existed in Switzerland since 1981. It was introduced to synchronize Swiss clocks with those of neighboring countries. “This decision was primarily motivated by economic reasons,” notes METAS, because time differences can impact commercial transactions or transportation, for example. Not to mention the practicality for cross-border workers.
The possibility of removing the annual change in time is currently the subject of political discussion, in Switzerland but also within the European Union. In March 2019, the European Parliament called for the change in standard time to be abolished from 2021. However, not all decisions have been taken, either at the EU level or in every country.
In Switzerland, a committee chaired by National Council Member Yvette Estermann (UDC / LU) and Armin Capaul, father of the horn cow, has launched an initiative to undo the change of time. But that won’t work. Two months before the deadline, she only collected half of the 100,000 signatures requested, Yvette Estermann told Keystone-ATS.
The Lucernoise family wanted to enforce winter time all year round. The coronavirus crisis has made the text sound. “People have other problems now.”
Until further notice, the current regulations remain in effect, underscoring METAS. Therefore, on Sunday March 28, 2021, we will turn to summer time again.
