Most Swiss Christians do not believe the story behind Easter
April 7 2020 – 14:47
Nearly two-thirds of Swiss Christians who participated in the survey did not think that Jesus’ Resurrection was a historical fact. Three-quarters of the population as a whole does not believe, up from two-thirds in 2007.
In addition, a third of respondents in Swiss who speak French say they do not know the meaning of Easter, according to a survey of 1,031 people published on Tuesday by two religious organizations, the Swiss Evangelical Alliance and the Presse Alliance.
Women are more likely to be ignorant than men, the study said.
Religious belief in Switzerland has diminished over the years. Data from the Federal Statistical Office in 2018 shows that the percentage of Swiss residents who do not have religious beliefs has more than doubled to around 25% since 2000. Christianity continues to decline and followers of Islam gradually increase.
Nevertheless, some Easter traditions that have long been held in Switzerland are being revived, modified or created from scratch, while others have died completely.
