Switzerland considers the so-called “election” in Nagorno-Karabakh null and void, the Trend report cites a note sent by the Swiss Federal Foreign Office to the Azerbaijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Switzerland reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Responding to the so-called “elections” in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the Swiss Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Verbal Note stated that they considered the so-called “elections” null and void, “reading a message from the Azerbaijan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, the Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peaceful negotiations. Armenia has not adopted four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawing its armed forces from Nagorno Karabakh and surrounding districts.
