LAHORE: Punjab governor Chaudhry Sarwar said on Friday that the victory of government candidates in the Senate and Deputy Chair elections against the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) candidates was a referendum on the opposition’s narrative of political instability and division.
PTI-led government candidates Sadiq Sanjrani (48 votes) and Mirza Muhammad Afridi (54 votes) secured victory over rivals Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani (42 votes) and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri (44 votes) from PDM.
In his tweet, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar praised the success of the two PTI candidates, adding that the success of Sadiq Sanjrani and Mirza Afridi was a victory of democracy.
He said there is no doubt that the opposition narrative has been rejected even in Senate elections and the opposition must now understand that their narrative of chaos and division will never work.
He said the government did not come under threat from the opposition, Long March, adding that the government is now stronger than ever. The Sarwar government under Prime Minister Imran Khan was again successful and once again proved that the government and its allied political parties are strong and united.
He called on opposition parties to favor national interests over political interests and supported the government in legislation for electoral reform, adding that electoral reform would further strengthen democracy and parliament.
The governor of Punjab said the PTI government would complete its constitutional term and general elections would be held on time. “I once again advise the opposition to overcome long march politics and rallies and play a democratic role inside and outside Parliament,” he added.
Acknowledging the support of allied parties, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar said the PTI government thanked the allies for its unconditional support, stressing that the government is leading developed countries on the path to prosperity.
