The global digital subscription service DAZN has submitted an application to the Berlin-Brandenburg media authority (Mabb) for permission to distribute DAZN1 and DAZN2 linear sports channels in Germany.

As it stands, the German operating streaming service offers channels to commercial premises only. If approved, the new license will provide its distribution via cable, satellite, terrestrial and IPTV platforms.

While DAZN continues to drive key European markets, the company has a similar arrangement in Italy, having launched a linear DAZN1 channel for distribution via Sky Italia as part of a deal signed with domestic pay TV operators in September last year.

The DAZN app comes with its German service set to become one of the main broadcast partners for the top domestic football Bundesliga from the start of the 2021/22 season, increasing its live match quota by over 60 compared to the current campaign.

The digital sports media company will also become UEFA’s main broadcast partner for the Champions League in Germany from early next season. As well as elite club football competitions, DAZN has secured rights to the secondary UEFA Europa League.

The company has also recently expanded its reach in the German market after entering into separate regional agreements with two telecommunications companies, Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone, for the distribution of DAZN content via streaming platforms MagentaTV and GigaTV, respectively.

Internet giant Amazon interested in acquiring UEFA Champions League rights in Italy, according to Milano Finanza.

Italian business newspapers reported that Jeff Bezos’ company was among several parties to bid to secure coverage of European club football’s premier tournament for the 2021 to 2024 cycle.

Pay TV broadcaster Sky Italia currently holds exclusive rights to the Champions League and second tier Europa League on a three-year contract worth an estimated € 300 million (US $ 349 million) a year.

Commercial broadcaster Mediaset showed some matches from last season’s Champions League and will do so again this season as part of a two-year sub-license deal with Sky, which has a deal with Rai’s government network for the 2018/19 season.

Apart from Amazon, Sky, Mediaset and Rai, Milano Finanza reports that the Italian telecom company Tim is also running for the next three-year cycle, as is the sports streaming subscription service DAZN, which already shows domestic coverage of Serie A, the top football league. Italy.

It’s unclear how many Champions League matches Amazon is eyeing, but the Milano Finanza report says the company is “determined to win some” of what is on offer.

The Team Marketing Agency, which sells the rights to the Champions League on behalf of UEFA, launched a sales process in Italy earlier this month and had an October 12 deadline for broadcasters to submit their offers.

If the bid that Amazon reports is successful, it will continue the tech companies’ march in European football. At the end of last year, the company approved a three year contract to earn the rights to 16 Champions League group stage matches and a season knockout match for Germany’s Premier Video streaming service. Amazon is also in its second year as Premier League domestic broadcast partner, meanwhile showing some Bundesliga matches in Germany at the end of last season.

Milan Finance too recently reported that CVC is looking to strike a deal with Amazon that will see Prime Video streaming Serie A matches if a joint bid with a private equity firm to acquire a ten percent stake in the league’s new media rights business is successful.

CVC has made a reported € 1.62 billion (US $ 1.8 billion) worth of deals with US private equity firm Advent and Italian investment fund FSI, but faces competition from rival bids by Bain Capital and NB Renaissance.
