During his address at the October PDM rally in Gujranwala via video link from London, Sharif blamed the military chief General. Qamar Javed Bajwa and head of Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed for overthrowing his government before bringing him in Imran Khan came to power through allegedly fraudulent elections in 2018.
“General Qamar Javed Bajwa, you are the ones who pack up our government when it goes well. General Bajwa, you are responsible for cheating in the 2018 elections, restricting the media, kidnapping, torturing and harassing journalists and forcing judges to give decisions of your choice, ”said Sharif.
In an interview with BBC Urdu, Bilawal said neither Sharif nor his party had spoken about the direct appointment of the army or the head of the ISI while the PDM agenda was being prepared.
“During the all-party conference, there was debate about whether blame should be placed on one institution or all parties in anti-government rallies,” Bilawal said, adding that it was decided that “one institution will not be named, formation will”.
Bilawal admitted that he was “shocked” when he heard the former PM mention the names of soldiers and ISI chiefs in his speech.
“I am surprised that we don’t talk like this at the rally. By the way, Nawaz Sharif is leading his own party and I can’t control what he says, just like he can’t control what I say, ”said the PPP chairman, adding that the opposition doesn’t want the military leadership to step down.
“Let me explain that this (forcing the military leadership to resign) is not part of our demands and does not reflect our position,” said the PPP chairman.
He added that he personally refrained from leveling allegations at rallies when it came to his own party. “But Nawaz has the right to take such a position if he wants to.”
Bilawal said the former PM would not name General Bajwa and General Faiz without evidence. “Such accusations must be filed on the basis of evidence. I will wait for Nawaz Sharif to present evidence that supports his claim, “he said.
Bilawal also said that brining PM Imran Khan being strength cannot be attributed to just one person (Gen Bajwa).
