Thousands of people received free food and masks at the Government Road drive-thru Saturday | Instant News

ROUGE BATON – This October 31st, many locals are choosing to give back rather than just celebrate.

On Saturdays, many of the capital’s volunteers use the hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to participate in a box and mask feeding sponsored by a partnership between East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, Wesley United Methodist Church, and United Cajun Navy .

“We are here serving the community,” explained one volunteer. “We understand that people have been lining up here since 6.30am. So, we are delighted to come and be part of the effort to make sure people have food and ensure that people continue to be healthy during the pandemic.”

The event took place in the 544 Government Street parking lot, and more than 2,500 lunch boxes and masks were distributed.

Food Rack Notice | Free | Instant News

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hayward Community Food Rack (HCFS) now operates a drive-thru food distribution. HCFS is located on 16216W Highway 63S in Hayward.

HCFS is open every Monday and the first Saturday every month from 9 am to noon. Residents of Sawyer County and all sections of Birchwood, Cable, Springbrook and Stone Lake are entitled to receive food from HCFS. A photo ID is required for each family that receives food. New clients will be asked to provide additional documents when they come next. These requirements will be provided at HCFS.

HCFS has distributed more than 116,000 pounds of food so far this year and more food will come every week. Although HCFS does not receive government funding, HCFS receives and distributes government commodities from the ICAA (Indianhead Community Action Agency).

The general program gives each eligible family around 50 pounds per person for the month, including canned goods, milk, bread, meat and products. In addition to food that is distributed through public programs, the HCFS Food 4 Kids program currently supplies weekly food bags to children attending LCO schools and St. Mission Schools. Francis.

Procedures have changed during this pandemic to protect clients and volunteers. Clients simply leave their vehicles to load groceries and choose other free items available in the loading area. Please be patient when we make these changes to keep everyone as safe as possible. At this time, many foods are packaged and then fresh products, milk, eggs, juices, frozen meat and some paper items are added to each order.
