Karachi Frere Hall Gate-2 is open to the public after encroachment is cleared | Instant News

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has opened Gate no. 2 from Frere Hall to the public after removing encroachment from there.

KMC anti-encroachment department officials removed the iron warehouse installed at the gate on Saturday.

KMC Senior Director Bashir Siddiqui said the operation was carried out at the direction of Karachi Administrator Iftikhar Shallwani.

He said the warehouse had been installed over the past ten years as part of a security measure for the US Consulate General which was previously on Abdullah Haroon Street near the Marriot Hotel. The US Consulate was moved to Mai Kolachi Street in 2010.

In another operation, KMC eliminated encroachment from Songal Nullah in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. It has been four days since KMC started removing illegal buildings from the rainwater drains.

The KMC anti-encroachment team destroyed around 250 illegal houses, shops and other buildings with the help of heavy equipment. Siddiqui said the anti-encroachment team cleared a 1.5-kilometer section of the rainwater channel.

The 50-foot-wide canal has been reduced to only 2-4 feet because of this encroachment, according to the official. He said they would restore the true width of the Songal Nullah.

The operation will continue until all encroachment is removed, Siddiqui added.

The Karachi administration halts fencing work around Frere Hall | Instant News

The Sindh government gave an order to stop work on a second layer of fences to close off Karachi’s Frere Hall park on Thursday.

Fencing is carried out by the Guardian Council, which is the group that looks after the management and maintenance of the historic Frere Hall and its gardens.

This fence will partially block the entrance to the park for the public.

Architect Marvi Mazhar tweeted his photo.

“It’s terrible to see Frere Hall being closed off by a second-tier fence. The only park which is an island and is open from all sides. #public places #karachi #frerehall @Mahimaher @Tokopedia – what a shameful public private partnership! He tweeted.

Karachi administrator Iftikhar Shallwani told SAMAA Digital that work on the fence had been halted. He said the Guardian Council took the initiative without notifying the administration.

“We have ordered them to immediately stop fencing work,” said Shallwani.

An agreement was made regarding this between the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and the Guardian Council when Wasim Akhtar became mayor of Karachi. This was done for the advancement of Frere Hall, but the condition of the historic building has not improved.

The Karachi administrator said the KMC had scheduled a clean-up campaign at Frere Hall for Sundays.

All fences, he said, would be removed.

Shahid Abdulla, a member of the Guardian Council, told SAMAA Digital that the board will create a safe play area for children in the corner of the park.

He said the fencing would ensure safety in the current law and order situation.

The council has submitted a proposal to close the park at midnight because all parks in Karachi are closed at night.

“We have made a proposal keeping in mind drug addicts have repeatedly stolen benches and lamps from Frere Hall parks,” he said.

In April 2018, Akhtar plans to hand over the management and maintenance of Frere Hall and its gardens to an 18-member Guardian Council for a period of five years.

In November 2018, the City Council officially handed it over.

The chairman of the Guardian Council is Shahid Feroz. Some of its members are Amin Hashwani, Durriya Kazi, Ghazi Salahuddin and Shahid Abdulla.
