Shahzad Waseem urged PPP, PML-N to fulfill the promise of transparent elections in the Senate

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Head of the House of Representatives in the Senate Dr Shahzad Waseem has urged the PPP and PML-N to fulfill their promises of transparent elections in the Upper House through open voting.

Speaking to the media together with Special Assistant for Political Communications Shahbaz Gill in Islamabad on Thursday, he said in line with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision we are taking steps at all levels to make Senate elections transparent.

Citing the Constitution and relevant rules, Shahzad Waseem said the previous recommendations from the National Assembly and Senate strengthened our stance on open voting in the Senate elections.

Dr Shahzad Waseem said that, for the first time in the country’s history, the PTI-led government had embarked on a bold step towards transparency in Senate elections.

He said the opposition rejected the open voting system simply because they wanted to trade horses and to promote money politics.

Earlier, Shahbaz Gill said Prime Minister Imran Khan was committed to ending the horse trade and the use of money in Senate elections.

He also condemned statements insulting retired PML-N leader Captain Muhammad Safdar against elected members of the Punjab Assembly from Gujranwala.

Mohmand asked the PM to reconsider the party candidate | Instant News

PESHAWAR: Former provincial minister and Pakistani leader Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) from Mardan, Iftikhar Mohmand, on Sunday asked Prime Minister Imran Khan to reconsider Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s list of party candidates for Senate seat based on promises and commitments made to him during elections general 2018.

“I have withdrawn the nomination letters from the seats of the National Assembly and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly from Mardan following the bail given to me by Imran Khan,” Iftikhar Mohmand said at a hastily held press conference.

He said he believed Prime Minister Imran Khan was honest, sincere and firm in his commitment. “Therefore, I hope he will honor the commitment he made with me,” he added.

Iftikhar Mohmand said he represented the Mohmand tribe from all over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and after withdrawing his nomination letter in the 2018 general election, he had asked the Mohmands to support PTI candidates across the province.

He said that based on the number of inhabitants, the Mohmand tribe was entitled to representation in the Senate.

Regarding the question, Iftikhar Mohmand dismissed the impression of being refused a party ticket because he did not make a donation to PTI.

“Not all of them. No one at PTI has ever asked or approached me for payments or donations,” he added.

The PTI leader emphasized that he did not believe in investment politics and horse trading.

Answering another question, Iftikhar Mohmand said he had not yet decided about his future actions but had asked the prime minister to inform him of the reasons for ignoring him when selecting the PTI candidate to take part in the Senate elections. He said he had been in politics for the past four decades and wanted to continue his political career.
