Italy canceled anti-trust investigations against 4 airlines | Instant News

(MENAFN – IANS)

Rome, October 24 (IANS) Italy’s competition regulator announced that it had canceled an anti-trust investigation of four major discount airlines after the company agreed to change their policy regarding refunds on flights canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, the Competition and Market Assurance Authority said it was expanding a longer investigation to include discount airlines Blue Panorama, Easyjet, Ryanair and Vueling based on consumer complaints that they would only issue flight vouchers for canceled flights rather than full refunds. , Xinhua news agency reported.

On Friday, regulators said airlines agreed to allow potential travelers, who were unable to travel because their flights were canceled, to decide between a voucher and a cash refund.

Authorities said they would continue to look at other aspects related to competition from company operations.

Additionally, Friday’s decision had no impact on preliminary investigations into Italian flagship Alitalia and regional discount carrier Volotea, which preceded an expanded investigation.

The developments come as the European aviation industry has been rocked by the pandemic, which is now in the midst of a second wave.

During the first wave that began in the spring, nearly all European flights were canceled as countries imposed national coronavirus lockdowns, and travel between Europe and major markets such as the US, China and Brazil remained restricted.

Even in Europe, airlines typically operate at less than half capacity, while demand for flights is diminishing due to coronavirus fears.
