Studies reveal Germany is an unattractive location for family businesses | Instant News


A new international location study, which aims to evaluate the country’s framework for family business, has put Germany near the bottom of the list. The study cites German high corporate tax and poor quality infrastructure as reasons for its weak performance.

Country Index for Family Business

The Mannheim-based institute of economic research, the Leibniz Center for European Economic Research (ZEW), has compiled its annual “Country Index for Family Business” which looks at how attractive 21 different industrialized countries are to family business. This year Germany is in 17th place, down from 14th place the previous year, with only France, Spain, Japan and Italy performing worse.

The results of the study were disclosed by the Family Business Foundation, which commissioned the study. Accordingly, the US was ranked first, followed by Great Britain and the Netherlands. ZEW incorporated a number of factors into its study, including tax, labor costs, productivity, human capital, regulation, financing, infrastructure and energy.

Germany lags behind its competitors

According to the study, Germany’s biggest drawbacks are high corporate taxes and labor costs. ZEW also criticized the quality of German infrastructure, especially traffic routes and information technology. “In terms of infrastructure quality, Germany now appears markedly behind its competitors in Western and Northern Europe, but also in North America and Japan,” the study said.

Germany has already reached 15th place in the latest Quality of Life Index compiled by Blacktower Financial Group, outperforming countries such as the UK, France and Spain.

2020 Expats Quality of Life Index

The Quality of Life Index is ranked by the Blacktower Financial Group, which ranks the best countries for expats based on six key metrics. The ratings help provide financial advice as well as assess the quality of life for expats who have settled around the world.

The study found that there are four main reasons people move abroad: family, lifestyle improvements, the promise of increased income and finally, new adventures and activities. Based on this, the study took data from 195 countries to determine the scores for each country average monthly salary, the cost of living, the ratio of property prices to income, quality health and the level of global peace.

According to the study, Switzerland is the best country for expats to move to in 2020. It has the highest quality of life of all places surveyed due to its strong score in the ratio of average monthly salary and property prices to income categories.

German performance

Germany is ranked 15th in the Quality of Life Index for expats, scoring above average in six main categories. The federal republic achieves an excellent score in the Health Care Quality category. Blacktower also noted that Germany has a fairly low cost of living compared to other European countries.

Germany scores poorly in the World Happiness Ranking category and has a relatively low average monthly salary.

Germans are well known for their love of cash and their skepticism about cashless payments. However, Germany is slowly moving towards a more cashless society, with contactless payments growing in popularity in federal republics.

The grieving swan lifts the train in Germany for nearly an hour | Instant News
