In the ranks of college football stadiums, few can match the history and prestige of the Rose Bowl or the Big House.
The University of New Mexico will visit the two in just 14 days in 2025.
UNM announced Wednesday that it was adding Michigan to its non-conference schedule four years from now. The Lobos will open their 2025 season at Michigan Stadium, on August 30 which will be the first meeting between UNM and Wolverines.
New Mexico will have its home opener a week later against Idaho State, then head to Pasadena, California, for a September 13, 2025 date with UCLA at the Rose Bowl.
Financially, this is a huge windfall for UNM. The school is guaranteed a payment of $ 3 million for the two games. The football team’s average annual budget is around $ 10 million.
Michigan will pay UNM $ 1.8 million in three installments, the first of which comes no later than March 31, 2022, when Michigan agrees to transfer $ 300,000 to UNM. A second payment of $ 500,000 was made two years later with the final $ 1 million given to UNM by March 31, 2026.
The game contract for UCLA is $ 1.2 million.
A guaranteed seven-point game to play on the street against Power Five opponents has been a trend for UNM for several years. The truncated 2020 season ended a record 20 consecutive years playing at least one game against teams from major conferences.
The Lobos were originally slated to play at USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and against the Mississippi State of the Southeast Conference in the fall. Both matches were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. UNM will play an abbreviated seven-game season in 2020, with all matches played against rivals Mountain West Conference.
Upcoming dates for Power Five schools include trips to Texas A&M (2021, 2023 and 2027), LSU (2022), Auburn (2024), Oklahoma (2026) and Oregon State (2027). The game against Oregon State is part of a home-and-home series in which the Beavers will visit Albuquerque in 2028. According to game contracts agreed to by each school, no school will receive guaranteed compensation from the other.
As for everything else, UNM will get a $ 12.4 million game guarantee over the other eight games over the next seven years. The biggest payout will come from a trip to Auburn on September 14, 2024. New Mexico will get $ 1.9 million for that one game.
UNM has at least one open non-conference date remaining between 2024 and 2029. New Mexico athletic director Eddie Nuñez has said in the past that football teams will often use the so-called bodybag play against the Power Five program as a means of achieving goals. Fulfill.
Most of the funds from the 2022 trip to LSU have already been paid to UNM. Much of it was allocated to help balance the previous budget, and to the purchase of former Lobos head coach Bob Davie, who was fired by the school in 2019.
He was replaced by current coach Danny Gonzales, who spent part of his early days at work saying he was willing to play with any team in a bid to increase the marketability of Lobo’s football and gain exposure on a national scale.
He’ll get it by 2025 with Michigan and UCLA. With a seating capacity of 107,601, Michigan Stadium will be the largest venue Lobos has played and could attract the largest audience in the history of UNM football. The Lobos played in front of 100,990 fans during the 45-0 defeat at Texas in 2012 and 99,051 in the 2017 loss at Texas A&M.
The Rose Bowl holds 90,888 seats and has hosted the famous postseason bowl games of the same name, as well as five Super Bowls. UCLA has played its home games there since 1982.
