Face masks have changed from basic necessities to become fashion accessories | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – Six months ago, Maggie Ibarra-Jimenez embarked on a journey she feared would change her life for the worse.

The city of San Antonio has issued an order for all non-essential businesses, including its Maddie Mac Boutique, to close indefinitely due to the coronavirus.

Ibarra-Jimenez, who sells handicrafts in her northwestern shop, wonders what she will do next.

However, he said a friend, who is partnering with a separate business, is looking at the future and providing advice.

“She told me, ‘Maggie, you have to make a face mask,” said Ibarra-Jimenez. “Sewing is none of my business, but that is rapidly changing.”

With a sewing machine donated by another friend, she started learning how to use a needle and thread.

Now, he couldn’t stop making masks because the demand for his handmade designs had increased greatly.

He even had to recruit his grown children to help out on his assembly line.

“The leopard mask, people really like it. It has something to do with college or depending on your profession, ”he said, explaining some of his work.

Ibarra-Jimenez, a self-described “fashionista”, decided to turn what was needed into a fashion accessory.

And it turns out that many mask wearers agree with this concept.

“I’m just going to get a style, like a butterfly or pink with rhinestones on it,” said Faith Estrada, who at the time of the interview, wore a colorful facepatch she bought in Houston.

Estrada said he prefers fancy masks over the basic paper types worn by medical professionals.

Betty Tarver, who is dressed in a homemade light blue dress, says she usually doesn’t think much of the problem even if other people do.

“I’ve seen some that are very, very cute and they have sequins and gems,” Tarver said.

For Avis Love, the white mask wrapped in musical notes has a more sentimental value.

She says her son made it, himself, and gifted her.

However, if the opportunity arises, he usually adapts his mask to his outfit.

“I have a different one,” he said. “My favorite is my black skin.”

Ibarra-Jimenez had a hard time deciding which creation he liked best.

He is sure, that he will not stop creating in the near future.

“I don’t know how long we’ll be wearing this, but for sure we have to feel comfortable,” he said. “And stylish, fashionable.”

“I will be excited and post things on Facebook, and people will say, ‘How much?’ That’s the beginning, “he said.

Swimsuits now accompany items such as sunglasses, hats, earrings and party dresses. More casual, everyday items will also become part of the ranks in the future, and Wallican-Nesbit sees no limits on Luxe Life – even talking about going into the retail travel business together.

“When I started studying fashion, the industry was based in France – I studied French and studied there. Now in China – that’s the center of everything, “he said. “It would be great to host some type of shopping trip or resource.”

Buffalo hopes for a positive buzz, encouragement for the hospitality industry from Jays games | News | Instant News

Dottie Gallagher, president and CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, said he was “delighted” to see Blue Jays coming to town.

“There are real economic benefits in terms of hotel room nights, and catering expenses for Buffalo and Erie County,” he said. “Given that the tourism sector has become one of the hardest hit regions in the economy, that is a bright spot.”

The recreational and hospitality employment count in the Buffalo Niagara area in June fell 36.5% compared to last year, according to state employment figures. The hotel occupancy rate has plummeted, with poor travel plans, and other conferences and events.

“You will make the players travel here and you will see an uptick on [hotel] occupancy rates, “said AJ Baynes, president and CEO of the Amherst Chamber of Commerce.

The Jays game in Buffalo also means Sahlen Field will come back to life, after a minor league baseball game was canceled this year. Plus, the stadium will get some quick improvements to bring the venue to MLB’s expectations. “We have benefited from improvements made to the stadium that we didn’t have to pay for, and that is a city-owned facility,” Poloncarz said.

There is also the problem of putting more people back to work, with unemployment in June surging to a level of 13.7% from 4.1% last year.

“Although I’m not sure how much work will be added back for this season, the stadium will be dark,” Gallagher said. “We know people from this region will work thanks to this decision.”

Pubs in the UK are trying to avoid last orders because the virus crisis is deepening | Instant News

LONDON, England (AFP) – The French House survived two world wars and a global recession. Charles de Gaulle is said to be a frequent visitor and Dylan Thomas once left his script for Under Milk Wood at the bar.

But the 129-year-old pub in Soho, central London, is under threat from a coronavirus outbreak, and has launched online requests for £ 80,000 (US $ 92,000) to keep it going.

“It’s terrible,” said the landlady, Lesley Lewis AFP. “We have to do that. We don’t have enough reserves to use it again. “

Lewis, who has run the pub for 31 years, said he did not know whether the pub had been closed before, although it was said to have closed “for a day” after being bombed in World War II.

The pub is trying to raise money from “friends, fans, and their families” for trying to meet ongoing costs without taking.

ANCIENT, THE RIGHT IS NOT TRANSFERED

The seven-week national closure has had a devastating economic impact in the United Kingdom, including the pub – one of the best-known institutions in the country.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered them all closed at the end of March. They might not reopen before the earliest July.

“We are taking the ancient inalienable right of free-born people in England to go to the pub,” he said darkly.

Historians believe it could be the first time since the Great Plague of 1665 – or maybe ever – that all English pubs were closed.

“In modern times, the only precedent was during the Second World War. Pubs are sometimes closed due to lack of beer, “said social historian Paul Jennings.

But even during bitter conflicts they remain open because they are seen as “good for morals”, he added.

The question now is whether everything will be reopened after the lock is lifted.

IMPACT OF DEVASTATION

England is home to around 50,000 pubs, which employ nearly 500,000 people – and the industry is facing hard times even before the devastating effects of COVID-19.

The British Beer and Pub Trade Association said many landlords have struggled to survive in the face of economic attacks in recent years.

“Local” owners have to deal with increasing beer fees, smoking bans, the 2008 global recession and rising business prices.

Many landlords are now faced with immediate problems because they have to pay rent to factories that usually have their place of residence, and taxes due to the local council.

In addition, they lost stock and had to leave staff – or at least manage this problem by finding vacation payments and applying for help from the Government support scheme for small businesses.

“This clearly has a devastating effect on the industry,” said Tom Stainer, CAMRA chief executive, Campaign for Real Ale, which promotes traditional British pubs.

“I think it’s naive to expect every pub to go through this.”

GAPING HOLE

The Hearsall Inn in Coventry, central England, is proud to have the “best pint of Guiness”.

But co-owner Daniel Scott served his last drop of black goods on March 20.

He said the current crisis could not be compared to anything he had known in the 22 years his family ran the pub.

Traditional pubs near the city center are usually packed and are the focus of the local community.

Because of this, Scott was sure they would withstand storms.

“I’m positive,” he said. “We are well established and we have great regular customers and if you ask one of them, they want to go back to the pub.”

The customers still want to go back to the boozer.

Rakesh Modha will go to his local village, The Linden Tree, in Bursledon, near Southampton in southern England, up to four times a week, helping to run weekly quizzes among other things.

“I missed it and interacted with my friends,” the accountant said. “A gaping hole is clearly visible in my life.”

As the Government seeks to gradually lift lock restrictions, pubs may be reopened in several forms in the coming weeks and months.

But there might be a change: Scott said protective screens for staff and customers might need to be introduced, and door staff hired to limit numbers.

Whatever the shape, Jennings believes the pub will stand the storm.

“This pub will definitely be there for a long time,” he said.
