A Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London (MQM-L) worker has been arrested in Karachi for alleged links to India’s spy agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).
The arrests were made by the Counter-Terrorism Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Karachi.
A spokesman for the FIA said officials carried out raids in Gulistan-e-Jauhar to break into the terror network and arrest a suspect, Abdul Jabbar, alias Zafar Tension. “The suspect is an expert in making bombs and using sophisticated modern weapons,” said the spokesman, adding that Jabbar was an employee of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Agency (KSWB) and had visited India four times for militancy training.
An FIA spokesman explained that the suspect was a member of the Muttahida Quami Movement-London (MQM-L) and part of the RAW sleeping cell in Karachi. He received funding from a man, Mehmood Siddiqui, via hawala, which was used in terror financing and target assassinations.
The suspect has gone to jail on two occasions, the FIA claims, adding that he was involved in attacks on MQM-Haqiqi leader Afaq Ahmed and other political activists and received instructions from Siddiqui in India.
About a dozen MQM-L men suspected of being linked to RAW have been arrested in recent months in Karachi.
On July 15, the FIA claimed to have arrested a key culprit from the RAW sleeping cell, identified as Zafar. He is suspected of being involved in sending money through illegal means from Karachi.
The raid was carried out by a team from the FIA’s Anti-Terrorism Wing in Saddar after obtaining information from suspected RAW agents who had already been detained. According to the FIA, money was given to anti-state elements through a secret international network of hawala / hundi operators.
On July 22, the FIA Counter-Terrorism Wing discovered another international network of illegal hawala and hundi businesses and arrested suspected RAW agents in Karachi. The suspect, identified as Junaid, is suspected of funding an enemy of the state through an established hawala and hundi network in the city. The arrest was carried out during a raid in the Dhoraji area.
