Srikkanth believes that before Dhoni’s inclusion in the national team, Indian cricket was dominated by metro cities because the players from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai were formerly regular members of the squad.
But when Dhoni who was born in Ranchi entered the national team, it gave hope to novice cricket players who now think they can make it big in the Indian team.
Dhoni made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2004, however, the flamboyant goalkeeper did not have a good outing because he only scored 19 runs in a three-match series.
But the goal keeper actually arrived in the series against Pakistan in 2005 when he scored 148 runs in the second ODI in a six-match series in Vishakapatnam.
Speaking of Dhoni’s legacy, Srikkanth said, “When someone like Dhoni made it to the national team, Indian cricket forces began to change, a cricketer from Ranchi was a masterstroke, a zone voter was watching cricket in the east and he saw something really special in the Dhoni. He didn’t do anything substantial in his first two matches and people erased it, but he played 140 strange beats against Pakistan and that made Dhoni really confident “.
“After the Dhoni era, we have seen many players from small towns make cuts. This legacy will be very large and this is proof for Dhoni. The team was handed over the right way to Virat,” he added.
Dhoni is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-plus World Cup, T20 World Cup and Champions Cup). Under his leadership, India also managed to reach number one in the Test cricket.
He first led the inexperienced Indian team to the T20 World Cup victory in 2007. He then took over the captain of ODI, but he had to wait to lead the Test team because Anil Kumble was doing the task in the longest format.
Srikkanth assumed that learning from Kumble really made Dhoni understand leadership qualities.
“When Dhoni was the captain of the 2007 T20 World Cup, he handled the team very well, the victory increased his confidence. He was always calm and cool, he motivated the players, an aggressive culture brought by Sourav Ganguly, MS is very contrary to that, when Kumble was the captain of the Test side, it was a good opportunity for Dhoni to study. Anil gave him much needed experience, Dhoni gave a lot of confidence to the players “.
In December 2014, Dhoni announced his resignation from the longest game format and it gave people such an opportunity Wriddhiman Saha to strengthen their position on the sides for the longest game format.
Then in 2017, Dhoni gave the captain control to Virat Kohli in 50-plus formats. However, the goalkeeper enjoyed a great friendship with Kohli and the two were often seen making joint decisions.
Dhoni is scheduled to return to the cricket field on March 29 at IPLThe opening match between CSK and Indian Mumbai. However, this tournament has been suspended indefinitely as a precaution against corona virus.
Thirty-eight years old Dhoni is currently enjoying time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.
Dhoni had to face criticism because of his slow hit approach during India’s matches at high level tournaments.
Earlier this year, Dhoni found no place for himself in the list of centrally contracted BCCI players.
The board has released a list of central player contracts for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.
