The scheme dubbed “Park Adoption” allows individuals or companies to sponsor national parks in the Amazon region for a fee of 50 reais (9 dollars) per hectare per year, according to a government statement.

Between August 2019 and July 2020, 11,088 square kilometers of forest were cut in the area, according to Inpe, which represents the largest area displaced since 2008.

This is equivalent to about 4,340 football fields per day or three soccer fields per minute and compared to the same period last year, deforestation increased by 9.5%.

Bolsonaro sees the region primarily as untapped economic potential and wants to develop more land for agriculture, mining and energy production. He has dismissed international criticism of his environmental policies as meddling in domestic affairs.

Brazilian Sisters Bring Trees Back To The Rain Forest | Global Ideas | DW | Instant News

The Atlantic Forest stretches along the Brazilian coast to Paraguay and Argentina. One of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, only 20% of tropical forest remains. The remainder has been cleared, mostly for agriculture.

Forests are important not only for the wildlife there, but also for supplying water and energy for millions of Brazilians, especially those who live in and around the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Sister Ana Paula und Flávia Balderi is well aware of the problem. They founded environmental organizations Copaiba as a teenager 20 years ago. Named after the oil sap, which is taken from the trunks of several trees native to South America, Copaíba seeks to help restore forests by planting trees.

The sisters are now working with Mantiqueira Conservation Plan, a massive reforestation program aimed at protecting the Atlantic Forest and its water sources. Under the scheme, farmers and businesses are encouraged to plant trees on their land or to purchase CO2 certificates.

More than 400 communities, companies, universities and NGOs are part of the scheme, which is supported by Germany International Climate Initiative (IKI).

The “waterfall of dreams” flows into the Rio do Peixe, one of the most important tributaries in the mountainous region that supplies water to the Sao Paulo region.

Project: The Mantiqueira Conservation Plan aims to restore 1.5 million hectares of Atlantic Forest and is part of IKI-supported reforestation efforts across Brazil.

Project financing: The German Ministry of the Environment provides € 3,344,732.00 for landscape and forest restoration in Brazil. It is mainly used for networking, information exchange, awareness raising and the study and publication of reforestation projects. Reforestation under the Mantiqueira plan is financed through the sale of CO2 certificates, donations and partnerships.
