German seaside resorts remain empty over Easter | Instant News

Beaches that used to bustle with German tourists during Easter are now almost deserted due to pandemic restrictions.

Restaurants, bars and recreational facilities have all been closed since early November across the country, and hotels remain closed to tourists.

Current rules technically allow Germans to take day trips, but closed hotels and cold weather have stopped many from doing so.

The country’s disease control agency announced 18,129 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 and an additional 120 deaths on Saturday.

The director of Crown Resorts Australia quit because of his relationship with a billionaire shareholder | Instant News

(Reuters) – Australian casino operator Crown Resorts Ltd said on Monday that director John Poynton was stepping down from the board after regulators ruled he was not sufficiently independent from the company’s largest shareholder, James Packer.

Poynton’s departure is the latest in a series of executive exits at a casino operator that is one-third owned by billionaire Packer, after investigations accused him of money laundering and widespread governance issues.

Poynton has been on Crown’s board since 2018 as a representative of the private Packer company. After regulators rebuked Packer’s control of the board, Poynton said last month that he was ending his arrangement with Packer and would remain as independent director.

But on Monday, Crown Executive Chairman Helen Coonan said the regulator, the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA), considered it appropriate that Poynton was stepping down “because of a perceived lack of independence arising from his past relationship” with Packer.

Poynton agreed to resign “despite no adverse findings by the commissioners in the ILGA investigation with respect to its suitability, integrity or performance”, said Coonan.

Three Australian states have detained or said they would launch an investigation into Crown because Australian media reports accused the company of doing business with tour operators linked to organized crime.

Crown initially denied the allegations but admitted at a Sydney 2020 investigation that some of the claims were true.

Swiss-Cantonese rebels bow to the whims of the government on the ski terraces | Instant News

(MENAFN – Swissinfo) Some Swiss cantons that have reopened ski resort terraces in violation of national regulations are now reluctantly turning around under pressure from the federal government.

The canton in central Switzerland as well as Glarus and Ticino said on Friday that they would close open terraces again at the weekend. Graub√ľnden, who has also opposed the ban, announced earlier in the week that it was changing tactics under pressure.

Unlike neighboring countries, Switzerland opened ski resorts during the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, but with strict hygiene rules.

Shops, restaurants, bars, culture and ‘non-essential’ sports venues are currently closed across the country in a bid to contain the spread of the virus, particularly in connection with a new, more contagious strain. With the number of cases and hospitalizations now falling slowly, the government announced on February 17 that it would “carefully and gradually” ease the restrictions imposed on January 15.

Starting March 1, it plans to reopen shops, museums and sports facilities. The restaurant will have to wait until at least 22 March. There is intense pressure to accelerate easing measures, and when this is not being done, some cantons are defiantly reopening ski resort restaurant terraces to take home.

Following criticism from politicians and civil society groups, the Swiss government confirmed it would reduce its contribution to additional security from CHF3.65 million ($ 4.02 million) to CHF2.55 million for the annual meeting held in Davos over the next three years from 2022 .

As a result of the pandemic, the WEF decided to hold this year’s edition, which usually takes place in January, this summer in Singapore.

For the federal government, the WEF remains an ‘important platform for Swiss authorities’ to represent the concerns of foreign partners from business and politics, said the Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (VBS). It also strengthens Switzerland to host major global events.

Therefore, the government considers the WEF annual meeting to be an ‘extraordinary event’. It brings together about 3,000 people including high-level officials, CEOs, and spiritual leaders.
