The Ismaili SA community holds a massive food drive for people in need | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – “Share your blessings” – that’s the message from the San Antonio Ismaili community when they, together with the San Antonio Merchants Association, make a massive food trip to the San Antonio Food Bank on Saturday.

The trip takes place in San Antonio Ismaili Jamatkhana. Around 15 food pallets and hygiene products are collected for the food bank.

The group also donated 2,500 masks to the San Antonio Compassionate, a faith-based initiative in the city.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg is ready to help collect the important items.

“This is a great demonstration from the Ismaili community to really show what teamwork is. We see a series of cars coming in and everyone wants to be involved and everyone wants to help, “Nirenberg said.

This is the first time the Ismaili community is holding a food outreach event, but it is something they say will continue.

The church hosts a sustained food drive to help the community | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – because COVID-19 Shutdown, several families have experienced a devastating situation that made it difficult to put food on the table. Leaders from the Resurrection Church in Schertz are working to help alleviate the needs of the community by making sustainable food trips.

“Our church’s main mission is to meet those needs wherever they are, and we think that by doing this, we will help bring a little more relief to our community,” pastor Ray Brown, of the Resurrection Church, said. “Everyone is experiencing something now.”

Among their campuses in Schertz and San Antonio, the Church of the Resurrection is able to collect nearly 5,800 pounds of food that does not rot easily in one week.

Saturday morning, a total of around 50 volunteers gathered on church campuses to meet the target of an additional 8,000 pounds, or 100 barrels of canned food.

AJ Abalos woke up on Saturday morning to load the trunk of his car with a donation.

“I believe that it is our responsibility, to take care of everyone,” Abalos said. “It’s not just being here physically, but we have to go out to the community and help those who need help.”

The volunteers were eager to help reduce donations, but Minister William Jackson said the barrels were not filling as fast as before.

“(Last Saturday) we managed to fill 25 (barrels) in two hours and 43 (barrels) between the two locations, and that was incredible,” Jackson said.

Despite being a major achievement, the Resurrection Church wants to remind people that the need for food will not disappear.

“After those initial rumors, people might feel that we have achieved our goals,” Brown said. “We haven’t. We are doing everything we can to let people know that we are still (collecting food donations).”

Volunteers also try to show their appreciation to all mothers who make donations. Donors such as Abalos receive roses from volunteer Keith Blackmon even before their items are unloaded.

“This is extraordinary,” Abalos said. “(This) is far more than I expected. That’s just an extraordinary blessing. “

Blackmon said it was an honor to help celebrate mothers like Abalos.

“It’s nice to smile on the faces of mothers,” said Blackmon. “(This is to) tell them that we appreciate their contribution and appreciate the fact that they are a mother.”

As for the church, Brown said they would continue to look for ways to provide more assistance to the community.

The main campus of the Resurrection Church is located in Schertz at 1002 E. Live Oak Road. The location of San Antonio is at 16875 Jones Maltsberger Road.

The shirt touting the pride tacos of SA helped raise money for the food bank | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – Local lifestyle retailer SA Flavor revives the Alamo City-Austin taco debate in an effort to raise money for San Antonio Food bank.

Garrett Heath, founder Rasa SA, decided to make t-shirts that read “San Antonio” and “The Tacos are Better Here,” with each item gives $ 10 to the food bank.

Heath, along with several other people in the community, realized the severity of the economic crisis when he saw photos and videos of the distribution of the mega food bank in Trader’s Village. The food bank serves more than 6,000 families in the April 9 distribution, and footage of the parking lot filled with lined cars is distributed on social media.

Aerial footage from the San Antonio Food Bank distribution site is reminiscent of the economic crisis during the pandemic

This vivid reminder leads to an increase in awareness of the population’s need for food during the corona virus pandemic. And best-selling author Shea Serrano was able to raise $ 80,000 for a food bank with the help of her Twitter followers.

“The need is here in our community,” Heath said. “We must continue to support the food bank.”

Heath said he had sold 104 shirts, each for $ 22. He would end the first batch of pre-orders on Sunday, but people would still be able to order afterwards.

“I hope this continues,” he said, adding that he was “just blown away” by the response.

Three Fiesta medals from SA Flavor will also benefit the San Antonio Food Bank: $ 5 each The Medal “Tacos Are Better Here”, $ 2.50 from each “Taco Trail” medal and $ 1 from each lotería themed medal sold will be donated.

$ 5 for each “Tacos Are Better Here” Fiesta Medal purchased will be given to the San Antonio Food Bank. The medal was sold by SA Flavor. (SA taste)

A line of more than two miles long for rural food distribution | Instant News

THE COUNTY COUNTY – Demand for food and supplies during corona virus The pandemic has remained consistent throughout the country and in the San Antonio region.

Many lost their jobs, others did not have transportation to go to the shops and some were still without the supplies they needed for their families. To help as many people as possible, San Antonio Food Bank teamed up with Atascosa County to feed and hope for hundreds of people Saturday morning.

Vehicles began lining up around 2am Saturday outside the Atascosa County Courthouse, meandering around the neighborhood at least two miles away.

“We arrived here at 6:30 in the morning,” Deborah Frantz said. Frantz was in his car with his daughter to get groceries. “We’re about four blocks behind.”

Rural mass distribution is not scheduled to start until 10 o’clock but people like Alejandra Burdick don’t want to risk her husband or family starving.

Local women challenge the community to donate to the San Antonio Food Bank during a coronavirus outbreak

“We are in our 70s, so we only get Social Security,” said Burdick. “That’s not enough. (Food delivery) is very helpful because I have several grandchildren who come and live with me and we have to feed them while they live with me.”

Fighting for money and food was a reality for many people during COVID-19, but according to San Antonio Food Bank’s Head of Government and Public Policy, Mario Obledo, his needs could be greater in areas such as Atascosa County.

“Sometimes there is a shortage of grocery stores or options for families or individuals,” Obledo said. “In this case, we will be able to add and provide families who are already in line, feed them at least for one week, period. Maybe for a household of four people. “

First Baptist Church Jourdanton helps people register in advance for Saturday delivery. They, together with other churches in the area, helped form a group of volunteers who worked nonstop for more than five hours. Fruits, meat, eggs, items that do not rot easily, and more food is loaded into about 500 vehicles.

“How amazing that they will help others now,” said Atascosa County Judge Robert O. Hurley. “I hope that a few months from now when things get better, the spirit of this community continues. This is an extraordinary thing. “

A view that according to the San Antonio Food Bank would not have been possible without donors or their partners in Atascosa and the 15 other countries they served.

Mass distribution in San Antonio and rural communities is being planned based on existing needs. Pre-registration to receive food and supplies is required and can be filled on the food bank’s website here.

People without access to the website can contact San Antonio Food Bank at 210-431-8326.

SA Food Bank is worried about possible food shortages during the coronavirus pandemic | Instant News

San Antonio – CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank is worried that he will run out of food because of the growing need during the coronavirus pandemic.

During the distribution of non-profit food in Merchant Village on Thursday, more people than expected showed up to eat.

“I was driving on the other side of Loop 410, look at this line, and at that moment, I said to my team, “We will need more food,” said Eric Cooper, CEO of SA Food Bank. “This is crazy.”

Cooper said in total, 10,000 people showed up, which is 4,000 more than the estimated pre-registered person.

“We just have to make a decision. Kita Do we reject the family, or meet those needs? “So we can get pre-qualified for those people,” Cooper said. “Now, not everyone who appears we can get away, but those who succeed can get food.”

Cooper said because of his team they were able to meet the increasing needs.

“Our logistics team, SAPD manages the car lane and hundreds of volunteers – we are able to do it,” Cooper said.

He believes part of the reason why needs have doubled from 60,000 people per week to 120,000 people per week during a pandemic is caused by job losses and school campus closures.

“I think that’s what we saw yesterday. (There are) so many families who don’t have any more money, and they are scrambling to put gasoline in their cars to show up at the distribution where they hope to get food,” Cooper said.

Cooper is worried that when demand for food increases, food supplies will struggle faster than later.

“We work with farmers and farmers,” Cooper said. “We work with food producers, wholesale retailers, restaurants, hotels and caterers. Now, restaurants, hotels and catering are gone. We do not understand that. Food from retailers – they are sold out, and we struggle to get as much as we normally get. “

He said for the first time in 40 years of non-profit history, they had to seek help from the federal government through the US Department of Agriculture.

“If we don’t get some kind of intervention from FEMA or the state of Texas, I know we will run out of food,” Cooper said. “I mean, we don’t have enough to fulfill this new request.”

Cooper said although help would come, it might take up to 90 days.

“You know, people have to eat between now and later, and we will depend on what we can gather through philanthropy, and unfortunately, philanthropy will not make a difference in the deficiencies we experience,” Cooper said.

If you want to see how you can donate, pre-register for food or volunteer, visit San Antonio Food Bank website. The organization plans to host another mega food distribution on April 17 at Alamodome.
