San Antonio breweries brew beer to put food on the table for those in need | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – Like most of those in the alcohol or service industry, the San Antonio brewery, Roadmap Brewing Company, has experienced the hard part because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The company recently had to close their tap room a second time.

“We really can’t bring in as much revenue as possible through drive-thru as we can in the tap room,” said Dustin Baker, owner of Roadmap Brewing Company. “But it’s important that we remember to keep pushing forward and in the end we will get through it.”

Even though there were many problems, Baker turned his energy into helping others.

Large, red beers will soon be coming to San Antonio, thanks to a local brewery

“We have a line outside our business, looking to buy beer and show support,” Baker said. “I remember going home and looking on TV and seeing a different line on the food bank. And think wow, we are in a difficult situation because we have to change our business model, but that can be much worse. “

He and his crew started a lottery for one of the old brewing systems they didn’t use. They hoped to raise $ 1,000, then nine other factories joined in and donated many other items. In one month, they can donate $ 13,000 to the San Antonio Food Bank with the collected money.

Now they want to help again, this time by selling new beer where 100% of the profits will go to the food bank.

“This is the New England IPA which is a very hot beer style in our country today. This is a very advanced orange, there is no fruit in it, “Baker said.

Their supplier, BSG Craft, donated all the ingredients, allowing Roadmap to make around 200 gallons of their new beer “Canned Goods.”

As for everyone in the community who not only supports business but also those in need, Baker thanks.

“Seeing extraordinary support for this goal and for us is very humbling,” he said.

“Canned Goods” beer will be available today through four packs at 9am on the Roadmaps website. You can visit the site with Click here.

The community lives up to ‘San Antonio Strong‘ with a generous response to the COVID-19 pandemic, said the food bank’s CEO | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio community has helped those in need through nine weeks of difficult COVID-19 impacts.

That San Antonio Food Bank shows how far people’s generosity extends in the COVID-19 Crisis Impact Report, released Wednesday.

The report states 17 million pounds of food is distributed through 16 countries. There are 33,500 vehicles served in the drive-thru distribution, and volunteers help more than 26,000 hours.

CEO Eric Cooper said “San Antonio Strong” has been proven true in our community.

“It’s been the COVID-19 crisis that has brought this need,” he said. “But it also brings extraordinary generosity.”

That is the generosity that was seen when hundreds of families stopped for major food distribution days at places like Alamodome and the Pasar Pedak Village Flea parking lot. Ten thousand people on April 9.

Aerial footage from the San Antonio Food Bank distribution site reminds of the economic crisis during the pandemic

“But it is our city dwellers, it is a company headquartered here, that is, you know, the church, it is a foundation, it is extraordinary individuals – all of whom are starting to contribute so that we can keep supply equal to demand, don’t run out of food, “Cooper said.

About $ 9.1 million bought 200 semi-truck loads over the past nine weeks, and federal funds are now arriving.

Cooper said the funds arrived on time because the future was very uncertain.

“Cities are open, and the economy might be strengthened, but we don’t know what will happen in the future,” he said.

Bexar County Commissioner approved $ 1.5 million more for small business grants | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar District Commissioner Court approved $ 1.5 million on Tuesday to be used for small business grants after a previously approved $ 5.25 million loan and grant program was tapped dry.

The new grant round will use money from the federal CARES Act to provide up to $ 10,000 in grants to businesses with five or fewer employees. An additional $ 5 million in federal money that the district plans to use for loans could also end up being directed to get grants, although county staff still need to submit plans for that.

“If we talk about up to $ 10,000 per small business, that’s 150 small businesses that we can help immediately,” said Precinct 2 Commissioner Justin Rodriguez.

As well as an original $ 5 million loan and a $ 250,000 grant commission were approved in March, the new grant will be managed by the non-profit lender LiftFund.

San Antonio tenants were pressured by management, told to vacate during the COVID-19 pandemic

The initial round of funding, which came from the regional treasury, was provided through 261 loans and 52 grants. LiftFund uses almost $ 165,000 in additional funding sources to help fund approved loans that are too far in the process to be canceled.

Grant money went quickly, said LiftFund CEO and President Janie Barrera.

“In three days, we have excess demand,” Barrera said. “$ 250,000 is close to nearly $ 1 million in demand.”

Now there is a much larger slice of funding cake available and more to come.

The district has also planned to provide another $ 5 million in CARES Act money for loans, but officials decided that they might not be able to use federal funds in that capacity. While grant money will be distributed to the community, districts will still have accountability for loans.

“If you think about a loan, in the end it will be paid back. And this dollar is really meant to go and help businesses that are in need today,” said David Marquez, executive director of the Bexar Regency Economic Development Department.

The $ 5 million ended up being channeled into the grant program as well, either through LiftFund or other organizations. Rodriguez asked Marquez to bring back recommendations to the commissioner’s court on how to use the money.

WATCH: KSAT anchor 12 interviewed Governor Greg Abbott about reopening Texas

The commissioner also requested that the new funding round be fairer in all regions. Figures provided by LiftFund show 85 loans given to Precinct 3 businesses compared to 33 loans in Precinct 1 in the first round of loans and grants.

“We need to have a balance at the police station, because every police station pays it but doesn’t get the same amount,” said Commissioner Tommy Calvert, whose police station 4 received 63 loans.

LOAN FIRST LOAN (provided by LiftFund)

  • Precinct Loans 1 33 (13%); $ 650,506
  • Precinct Loans 2 80 (31%); $ 1,526,200
  • Precinct Loans 3 85 (32%); $ 1,773,100
  • Precinct Loans 4 63 (24%); $ 1,215,000
  • TOTAL: 261 loans; $ 5,164,806

About half of the loan recipients are small businesses in retail, service, and food and accommodation services, according to LiftFund. Barrera has no details available for the 52 grants given.

Barrera hopes the new round of grants will not open until June, saying the county will need to decide on parameters for the grant. In addition, businesses will have more time to prepare.

“It will not be first come, first serve. It will be based on whatever the county decides on how they want to distribute the funds,” Barrera said.

The San Antonio family witnessed a South Padre Island condo fire | Instant News

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Staying at the San Antonio family at a beach resort on South Padre Island took an unexpected turn on the following Saturday a large fire occurred in a nearby condominium complex.

Reynaldo Gutierrez, his wife and their 14-year-old daughter stayed at the Beach Resort on South Padre Island when they witnessed a large fire at the Gulfpoint Condominiums building around 8:30 am Saturday morning.

The resort’s electricity was turned off, the storm rolled and Gutierrez said his family was terrified when he saw the building engulfed in flames.

“They are afraid and I do not blame them … That is something you do not see often. Hopefully no one is hurt,” Gutierrez told KSAT 12 in a statement.

The storm came to the area around the same time as the fire and Gutierrez said despite the heavy rain, the flame was still formidable.

“Heavy rain, but amazingly, the fire is not quenched,” Gutierrez said. “That’s weird! I’ve never seen a fire react to rain like that … it’s so windy, so it’s the perfect ingredient for this stubborn fire. “

The building was destroyed in a fire, with damage estimated at around $ 7 million, according to earlier report.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and no injuries have been reported.

The male pygmy hippo calf was born just before 9 a.m. on April 9, and weighed 12.4 pounds. This is the first successful pygmy hippo birth at the Zoo in more than 30 years. rWildlife care specialists report that the calf, which has not yet been named, is nursing and getting lots of attention from the first-time mother—and it is meeting or surpassing the milestones for a young pygmy hippo, including the ability to go underwater. When mom and her calf were given access to the outdoor maternity habitat, staff added a fence to prevent the calf from venturing into too-deep water. The calf demonstrated the natural adaptations and instincts of pygmy hippos—to close their nostrils and to hold their breath under water—and today, both Mabel and the calf, who weighs 25 pounds, have full access to the pool in the maternity yard. rPygmy hippos are one of hundreds of endangered species the staff at San Diego Zoo Global is working to protect from extinction, and in recognition of Endangered Species Day—May 15, 2020—the organization is celebrating its supporters who make this work possible. Every member, donor or volunteer—and anyone who has visited the San Diego Zoo or San Diego Zoo Safari Park—has contributed to San Diego Zoo Global’s work to save species worldwide. The San Antonio family built a virtual lemonade stall to raise money for a food bank | Instant News

SAN ANTONIO – During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lemonade stand was postponed. But that is not the case for one family who started a virtual lemonade kiosk to use it as a teaching and giving tool.

Arica Espinoza, the mother of Andi and Aldus Espinoza, aged three and five, has added teachers to her resume, as do hundreds of thousands of parents across the country.

Espinoza lost his job during the pandemic, but called it a hidden blessing because he could use his time with his two children to teach them how to help the community.

While teaching the alphabet and getting to the letter L, he wants to be creative while also teaching his children how to give back.

“So I think lemonade stands,” said Arica Espinoza. “But with the development of this era it seems like it is not the right thing to do. Then I thought, why don’t we do it virtually? “

The money they collect is to go to the San Antonio Food Bank.

“There are children who are starving now,” Aldus Espinoza said.

The family was fascinated by the response to their Facebook post, where they shared their virtual lemonade fundraiser.

“We think maybe $ 200,” Arica said.

However, that figure is more than $ 2,000. Mother said that they formed an assembly line and the children also helped.

“My job is to put all the packages there,” Andi said.

Aldus said his favorite part of the job was delivering goodie bags.

“When we took them on the doorstep, they came out and they said they were very happy,” Aldus said.

Espinoza took a step forward and donated the remaining goodie bags to local frontline medical workers.

“With the outpouring of donations, most people say no, we just want to donate, store lemonade so I just want to do something to respect those people,” Arica said.

Arica’s husband, Adrian Espinoza, said he was proud of his family, calling his wife a rock star for taking teaching and giving to another level.

“Keeping our children involved, as you can see they are not the most involved, they get bored easily so he does all these extraordinary things,” Adrian said.

Adrian said he spoke with his company Horizon Theraputics and the company agreed to match his family’s donations, so that in total, they had raised $ 4,000 for the San Antonio Food Bank.
