Timo Werner or Leroy Sané? That seems to be the decisive question at Bayern Munich at the moment. The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic means that Rekordmeister can only buy one of the next two next summer and still sign players in other areas.
Last summer, the decision seemed easy. Bayern had an agreement with Timo Werner completed but the transfer failed, vetoed by sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić. Instead, the club wants to sign Leroy Sané – it will be a big deal, € 100 million plus transfer fees and another € 100 million salary. Package worth € 200 million.
Even for Bayern, a significant deal. But the transfer failed when Sané tore his ACL in the Community Shield. In exchange, Bayern signed Ivan Perišić and Philippe Coutinho on loan – Werner has agreed to a new contract in Leipzig, the € 25 million exit clause is, therefore makes no sense.
Now Werner’s agreement seems possible once again. Thanks to head coach Hansi Flick, who recently signed a new contract at Bayern. Flirty, according to various sources in Germany, are big fans of Werner. The head coach believes that Werner’s ability to play on the wing and in the middle is a great asset. Furthermore, when used on the left wing Werner tends to track down the middle, leaving room for Canadian Alphonso Davies to continue to develop his unorthodox interpretation at left back position.
But Werner was not impressed when Bayern Munich left the transfer at the last moment last summer. Although the striker, in principle, can imagine playing for Hansi Flick, he now has another option. The biggest, Liverpool, where Jürgen Klopp is a big fan of strikers. Chelsea have also made contact with the Werner team, with Frank Lampard seeing the German international as a perfect partner for Tammy Abraham.
Werner hasn’t made a decision yet. The attacker wants to talk to all the clubs and also see what kind of impact the COVID-19 pandemic will have on the market. Sport Bild, however, speculated that personal conversation could be an advantage for Liverpool – Klopp was considered a Menschenfänger (roughly translated as charismatic leader), who could easily convince a player to play for him and his club.
Not good news for Bayern at the time, who had hoped that they could land Werner despite the difficulties last summer. As a result, Sané has become the main target once again. Manchester City and Bayern winger have looked back on several months of difficult negotiations.
First, Sané was upset because Bayern did not try to sign him last winter. Rekordmeister, however, does not want to risk the winger, who has just returned from injury. Secondly, there are Bayern camps who are upset with Sané’s decision to change agents, which means negotiations must be resumed. Third, some voices in the Bayern camp doubt whether Sané has the right character and full commitment to join Rekordmeister.
The third point, however, has been explained in private conversations between players and club officials. Furthermore, there is no doubt, Sané wants to join Bayern. But the winger, who has recently seen his market value reduced from € 100 million to € 80 million Transfermarkt, due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, it will still require a large transfer fee.
Although his contract expires in the summer of 2021, Manchester City will likely want more than € 80 million Sané now valued. The entire package for the winger remains in the area € 200 million according to sources in Germany. Large amount, which could make Bayern hesitate to complete the transaction whenever the next market opens.
