ISLAMABAD – In the midst of a COVID-19 crisis with the government advising private and industrial employers not to lay off workers, Pakistan’s ruling Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has fired more than two dozen employees of its Central Secretariat under “austerity efforts” “

Under the austerity effort, the PTI Central Media Department’s monitoring and research wing was almost abolished. The monitoring wing has observed print and electronic media.

Most of the laid off employees came from the Central Media Department other than IT, and the maintenance department, admin and telephone operators. “We were terminated abruptly in the name of cutting party operational costs when our family needed money to face the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic,” an employee who was fired told The Nation who did not want to be named.

Information of the PTI Central Secretary Ahmad Jawad told The Nation that around 30 employees had been laid off because the Central Secretariat was facing financial difficulties to meet its huge expenses. “It became difficult for the secretariat to manage this budget because it had to pay up to Rs 3 million monthly salary,” he said, adding that the number of employees had been reduced to reduce the financial burden on the secretariat.
