Georgian student on the rise, Caterina Don, finished in the top three for the third consecutive year at the Italian Women’s Play Match Championship in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy.
After leading Italian golfers with 8-under 136 in two qualifying rounds, he defeated three opponents in head-to-head matches, including 100 amateur amateurs Alessandra Fanali yesterday morning.
Don was knocked out in the semifinals to No. 67 and Denver University who are in second grade Anna Zanusso after playing a total of 34 holes on Friday.
Zanusso won 18th to finish 1-up at Don, who placed third in the same tournament two years ago and took runner-up in 2019. The Denver Pioneer competed against Carolina Melgrati in today’s final at 3 am EST.
Don maintains his amateur number 9 world despite a loss. A native of Perolo, Italy, he led the Bulldogs in four NCAA competitions as freshmen this season, completing overall No. 1 on 9-10 September Minnesota Invitational, fourth at The Molly in Portland, Oregon, at the end of September and tied for fourth at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in February.
This week’s tournament, produced by the Italian Golf Federation, is the first outing since Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on March 6-8.
Depending on the development of COVID-19, Georgian women’s golf can return to the link for college competition in about two months.
