To have a detailed view of various fuel management perspectives with a special focus on optimal consumption and recommendations for efficient use, a seminar was held at the Pakistan Railway Technical Training Center in Karachi on Friday.
All officers from Pakistan’s Karachi Railways division and related officials attended the seminar.
According to a press release from the Pakistan Railroad, fuel occupies a large portion of the Pakistan Railroad budget because almost a quarter (or 23 percent) of the annual budget is allocated for fuel every year. “During FY 2019-20, the percent of fuel expenditure was 18.71 percent (or Rs17.8 billion) of the total budget of Rs. 95 billion, “he said.
“Pakistan Railways must allocate a colossal amount in the heads of salaries and pensions that not only cannot be changed but is increasing every year. However, adequate fuel management targeting efficient and optimal utilization can open the way to reduce the department’s fiscal deficit from this head, “said a senior Pakistani Railway official.
The mechanical engineer of the Fasahatullah Baig division gave a detailed presentation on this issue. He said that in the course of track maintenance issues, rolling stock operational practices and driver behavior contribute to how fuel is consumed.
He said various steps had been taken to reduce fuel losses thereby ensuring savings. Pakistan Railway Division Superintendent, Arshad Salam Khattak, in his closing note said that the fuel awareness campaign will soon begin with the aim of efficient utilization.
