It’s a strange time to travel | To select | Instant News

Next week we will be in Pennsylvania to visit our daughter who is at school in Erie on Lake Erie This will be one of our most unique trips as face masks are needed for almost the entire trip . Traveling is just not what it used to be. Do you remember when people smoked cigarettes in the middle of the flight? A little light came on to tell the passengers it was time to put out their cigarettes, we were going to land. Smokers who flew on the plane at the time were very upset when new rules banned smoking on board. I have a feeling these same people would be really unhappy with the requirement to wear a mask for the entire flight We received an email reminding us that anyone over 2 years old must also wear a mask at airports except when we were We were also told that we would receive an “ all-in-one ” snack bag that included a wrapped disinfectant wipe, an 8.5 ounce water bottle and two snacks, as well as a sealed drink on flights over 2 hours and 20 minutes. “On flights shorter than that, we’ll have a sealed drink and that’s it. No more friendly flight attendant taking our drink order. Erie is quite close to Niagara Falls. We were wondering if we could see it or not, as people like to go to the Canadian side for a better view, and the border between the US and Canada is closed at least until the end of August. which is the boat that takes you near the falls, was closed in June, it is now open on the US side and available for people in good health, wearing masks and willing to stand at least 6 feet from other people on a small boat .Fort Niagara opened in July and is available for healthy masked visitors, which is the same for all the restaurants we stop at. There won’t be any buffets though, and it looks like food “that requires minimal preparation” will be the rule. Fortunately, Pennsylvania is not on the list of states that require a 14-day quarantine when we arrive home. We were also assured that the plane is cleaned within an inch of its life and that airports will be cleaner than our homes. Still, we have small containers of disinfectant to use liberally when we feel too far away from a sink and soap, and we’ll avoid other people like the plague. our face, and white where the mask was. It’s a strange time to travel. .

Paper Towels Can Eliminate Viruses Missed by Poor Handwashing, Study Shows | Instant News

People should dry their hands with paper towels to avoid spreading new coronaviruses, according to the authors of a study published on Friday who find disposable tissue better than jet dryers to eliminate pathogens that are missed by ineffective washing.

Global health authorities have highlighted its importance wash your hands with soap and water to protect against COVID-19, which has killed tens of thousands and spread throughout the world.

Contaminated hands are the main route for transmitting germs, which has the potential to spread pathogens to the surface – such as door handles or taps – and cause infection when people touch their faces.

A small study by experts from the University of Leeds and the Leeds UK Education Hospital NHS Trust found that if hands are not washed properly, drying with paper towels is more effective for removing microbes.

“We believe that our results are relevant to the control of the new corona virus that is spreading rapidly throughout the world,” said the writer, led by Ines Moura from the University of Leeds.

“Paper towels should be the preferred way to dry hands after washing so as to reduce the risk of contamination and spread of the virus.”

Four volunteers had their hands contaminated using bacteriophages – viruses that infect bacteria and are not harmful to humans – and then did not try to clean the microbes.

They then dry their hands with paper towels or jet air dryers in hospital toilets and continue to touch various surfaces including door handles, rail stairs, telephones and stethoscopes.

The researchers found that using paper towels and jet dryers reduced hand contamination.

‘Wash hands properly’

But for 10 out of 11 sample surfaces, the jet method left “much greater environmental contamination”.

Microbes are found on all surfaces touched after using a jet dryer, with contamination on average 10 times higher than after the use of paper towels.

The authors say this research is very relevant for hospital settings.

They note that while the NHS and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend the use of disposable towels after washing hands – and use them to turn off the taps – health facilities in the UK are increasingly using jet dryers.

“It is clear how much virus is left in human hands after washing is very dependent on how efficiently people wash their own hands,” said Paul Hunter, professor of medicine at East Anglia University, in response to the study.

“If people don’t wash their hands properly then other people might be at risk if they stand close to someone who uses a jet dryer. This study reinforces the need to wash hands properly so that as much as possible the virus is removed before drying.

This research, which has not been reviewed by colleagues, will be presented this year European Congress on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Paris this month, which was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.
