Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested two men, including a prime suspect, in connection with the April 5 robbery in which an Rs30 million reward bond was looted from a builder delivery driver on Jamshed Road in Karachi.

The men were arrested by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Karachi Police Criminal Investigation Agency with the help of CCTV camera footage. Police said the suspects were trying to leave the city, adding that gift bonds worth Rs25 million had also been recovered from their holdings.

The people arrested have been identified as Naveed Ahmed and Farhan Ahmed Hashmi. SSP SIU head Haider Raza said Ahmed was the leader of the gang consisting of Arman, alias Nomi, Aqeel, Ayan, Naushad, Ovais, Fazal, Ali and Rehan – all of whom were involved in the robbery.

SSP Raza said Ahmed had distributed Rs5 million worth of gift bonds among these people, adding that raids to arrest them and recover the remainder of the bond reward were ongoing.

Citing police statements from the arrested suspects, the SSP said Ahmed and his accomplice Mazhar had been arrested in the past for snatching up a bond prize worth Rs1.4 million from a doctor.

The officer said that Ahmed had been released from prison on bail after spending 13 months in prison, while Mazhar was still being held. The SSP said the gang was also involved in the recent Rs2 million worth of Gutka robbery in New Karachi.

A SIU investigation found that company employees were involved in the robbery, after which police arrested two of them in a raid on a bus terminal in the Saddar area as they tried to flee the city.
