Story

Set-piece magic: With more than 60,000 in attendance, Estadio Castelao watched a stunning match that saw three goals from set pieces. With just six minutes left, host captain Thiago Silva scored the opening goal when he headed a corner kick over the line with his left knee. David Luiz netted his team’s second goal with a long-range free kick before James Rodriguez pulled one back for Colombia from the penalty spot.

A broken Neymar’s dream: With a few minutes left to play, Neymar suffered a severe injury after being tied behind by Colombian Juan Zuniga. The broken vertebra of the striker ended his hopes of lifting the trophy at home and giving a big blow to the Brazilian campaign. Asked about his team mate, forward Hulk said: “This is sad news that no one hopes to hear. We are glad we won the match, but we are disappointed with Neymar. He prepared himself well for the tournament and was very excited. … He helped us a lot. “

Brazilians entertain Colombian stars: James Rodriguez announces his arrival on the world stage with a mesmerizing look on FIFA U-20 Colombia World Cup 2011. Three years later, Brazil 2014 saw the original Cucuta player score six goals to claim the Adidas Golden Boot. After the final whistle, Rodriguez cried as his team’s elimination sank. He was then comfortably entertained by Dani Alves and David Luiz before the Brazilian fans loudly applauded his fantastic performance.

Star

This game will remain etched in David Luiz’s memory. The Brazilian defender claims the Man of the Match award not only for his brilliant defensive performance, but also for his luxurious free kick that made Ospina grip the thin air as it flew past him to the upper right corner. In a wild celebration that had been lost in World Cup knowledge, Luiz ran to the corner flag before running and kicking him. Speaking of the attack, Luiz said: “I have been training for a year with Willian at Chelsea, so I’m happy to score today. It’s wonderful to see a ball fly like that into the goal, because it’s difficult for the keeper.”

What they say

“We didn’t concede many goals before the match, but we let one in early. We improved in the second half when we started moving the ball faster and Brazil started to worry. While their second goal kept us off guard, we continued to fight and approach leveling.”
Jose Pekerman, Colombian coach

“The team spent a lot of energy in the Chile match but recovered well, as you saw in the first round. If we manage to score the second goal, it will make us a little nervous. We lost focus because three of their attackers and James fell into space. We fought hard, ran a lot and finally won. “
Luiz Felipe Scolari, Brazilian coach

“We had a difficult victory, which was normal at this stage of the tournament. We knew Colombia would give us a hard time given their good performance here. The level out there was high, and it was a beautiful match.”
Ramires, Brazilian midfielder
