OPPO’s cheap smartphone A12 was recently launched in India at a price below Rs 10,000. It is equipped with a 4,230 mAh battery, dual cameras and a water drop slot, but can it compete with it in the competition? Let’s find it in the OPPO A12 review.

Design, display and construction

When it comes to the design of OPPO A12, you will get a polycarbonate body with a matte finish polygonal textured surface on the back, which OPPO calls a 3D diamond glare design. You will also find the dual camera and fingerprint scanner on the back.

The OPPO A12 is equipped with a 6.22-inch HD+ display (1520 x 720 pixels) with a drop-shaped groove on the top of the screen. Competitors offer Full HD+ displays and larger screens in this price range.

On the left are two independent volume controls and a three-slot SIM tray with a dedicated microSD card slot, while the other two slots are for dual 4G SIM. There is a power button on the right, nothing more.

At the bottom there is a micro USB port, a speaker, a 3.5 mm jack and a microphone. The USB Type-C port will definitely increase design and ergonomics.

Software and user interface

OPPO A12 runs on Android 9 out of the box, with the ColorOS 6.1 user interface on the top. This is 2020, most smartphones have been migrated to the newer Android 10, and Android 11 will be released in a few months, OPPO A12 lacks the latest Android 10 support and lags behind competitors.

ColorOS 6.1 can also be seen on many OPPO smartphones. The function provided by OPPO A12 is the same as that seen on other OPPO phones running on ColorOS 6.1. You can get bloatware as usual, but you can also use App Cloner, Game Space, and gesture controls.

Hardware, performance and gaming

On the inside, OPPO A12 is almost a beginner in terms of hardware. It is equipped with MediaTek Helio P35. The price of the entry-level CPU seems to have moderate performance. It has two variants: 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage space and 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage space, which can be expanded to 256 GB via a microSD card.

The performance of this phone is far from being comparable to phones equipped with Snapdragon 675 and Snapdragon 712. Compared with smartphones powered by Snapdragon 665, Snapdragon 665 can still provide better overall performance.

Take a look at the benchmark tests we performed on the phone, which are the results of the Geekbench 5 CPU and GPU and AndroBench storage benchmark tests.

Players should look for other things. If you want to play heavy games, such as PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty, and choose a better GPU, OPPO A12 seems to be running games with low and medium graphics, and these games require higher GPU performance.

If it’s worth boasting about its dual camera, OPPO A12 seems to be a joke when placing dual cameras in places where most smartphones today are equipped with triple or quadruple settings. Last year’s Redmi Note 8 and Realme 5 offered quad cameras in a similar price range. Some smartphones may be equipped with 48 MP sensors, while the OPPO A12’s 13 MP main camera and 2 MP auxiliary camera lose their luster.

The camera hardware seems to be outdated, you cannot record 4K video, 60fps video and slow motion video. The camera interface is very common, and the “Portrait” option can be used to shoot portraits with a bokeh effect in the background. More modes include panorama, expert, time-lapse, HDR, dazzling colors and stickers.

Since the camera is a dual lens setup, the wide-angle lens, telephoto lens and macro lens will be missed. We have taken some samples to show you the performance of the camera and see.

Battery Life

OPPO A12 is powered by a 4,230 mAh battery and comes with a standard 10W charger in the box. The battery performance is good, thanks to the HD+ display and power-saving CPU, the phone can run for up to a day and a half. At 5V and 2A, the charging speed is very slow, and the mobile phone does not provide a fast charger.

OPPO A12 is in the price range of 10,000 rupees, and in this range, many phones have better cameras, better display and slightly better performance, all of which run the latest Android 10 version. Buy last year’s Redmi Note 8 and Realme 5 with four cameras at last year’s price. The recently launched Realme Narzo 10a is equipped with a faster CPU and triple camera, which is worth mentioning in this price segment.

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Long battery life
  • Dedicated microSD card slot

  • Android 9 out of the box
  • Mediocre camera
