It took a while but Google finally fixed the most annoying error on the Internet Pixel 4, which does not require the user to open their eyes when opening the face.
Latest security patch for Android 10 currently being launched and adding in the “Requires eyes to open” option in the Pixel 4 face unlock menu. As the name suggests, this feature means users will only be able to unlock their phones with their faces if their eyes are open, effectively making the process unlock safer biometrics.
When Pixel 4 was relaunched in October, its fast facial unlock system, which was facilitated by the use of Soli chips and infrared sensors on the bezel on the cellphone which was rather thick for 2019, allowed users to only see Pixel 4 or Pixel 4 XL to open it. This works so well that it can compensate for Google’s decision to remove a pretty good fingerprint scanner found on the back of previous Pixel phones, such as Pixel 3a.
However, the face unlock system has come under fire after it was learned that someone can hold Pixel 4 up to the user’s face when they fall asleep and the phone will open.
Indeed, having someone in your room with such bad intentions may be a considerable security problem by itself, but being able to unlock your cellphone with your eyes closed is considered a security flaw in Pixel 4. After all, a nosy spouse or friend could exploit the system and use it to look carefully at the contents of your photos or messages.
Google seems to be rather slow in implementing eye-opening features, like Apple iPhone X with Face ID requires users to open their eyes and look directly at the phone to open it from the time it was released in 2017.
If you download Andriod 11 beta, then the open eye option has been available since the Developer Preview update 2. But if you stick with the full release of Android, then you can expect the option to come with the latest updates from Google.
The update also brought other tweaks to Pixel 4, especially overcoming memory leaks that block additional Bluetooth Low Energy connections, problems with dropping Bluetooth audio inputs in several calls, and delays encountered when opening the keyboard in some applications.
These tweaks will not dramatically change your experience with Pixel 4, but they help make it a little safer and more stable.
