Startups based in India that have built a Shopify – such as a platform for training centers to receive fees digitally from students, and provide classes and online learning materials that have received nods – and capital – from a number of leading investors.
Business-to-business startup, called Classplus, said on Monday that it had amassed $ 9 million in a Series A financing round led by RTP Global, a productive investor in early stage startups. Investors who have Blume Ventures, India’s Sequoia Capital spikeSpiral Ventures and Strive also participated in the round, said the two-and-a-half-year-old startup.
While dozens of companies are betting on hundreds of millions of students – and their parents – to embrace digital learning applications, Classplus, also supported by Times Internet, believes that tens of thousands of teachers and training centers that have earned a reputation in their neighborhood are here to stay.
“We serve hyperlocal tutoring centers which are present in almost every nook and cranny in India. Anyone born into a middle class family here is most likely to attend these classes, “said Mukul Rustagi, one of the founders and chief executive of Classplus, in an interview with TechCrunch.
“These are usually small and medium-sized arrangements that are run by the teacher himself. These teachers and training centers are very popular in their area. They rarely do any marketing and students learn it through word of mouth, “he said.
Rustagi described Classplus as “Shopify for coaching center.” Like Shopify, this service runs a market that offers teachers the ability to find or training centers. Instead, it offers a way for these teachers to improve their technology platforms to engage with customers (in this case, students).
Classplus has ridden more than 3,500 training centers on its platform, Rustagi said, more than 500 of whom began using the service in April after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government ordered to close schools and other public meetings in an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus.
The training center uses Classplus to communicate digitally with students, deliver video classes and other subject matter, and receive payments. These training centers can engage their students through the Classplus mobile app and website. “Joining the platform is as easy as signing up for a team collaboration application. The whole process takes less than 30 minutes, “Rustagi said.
“According to the Global Teacher Status Index by the Varkey Foundation in 2018, India is among the top 10 in the world in terms of respecting teachers, despite being in the top 10 in paying them. Classplus liquidates this imbalance by empowering tutors with full-stack cellular solutions, while maintaining and further increasing the tutor’s high reputation. The startup, which employs around 200 people, aims to have 10,000 training centers join the platform by the end of this year. It has sales teams and other members in around 70 cities in India at present. Classplus also plans to introduce additional features for training centers on its platform.
