The PlayStation Store will stop selling and renting TV shows and movies later this year. Sony announced a change on the PlayStation Blog to let players know that by August 31, 2021, it will not be possible to buy or rent video content on the PlayStation Store.
Sony said that the change comes from changes in customer behavior, that is, players tend to use subscription-based and advertising-based entertainment options, rather than directly buying or renting video content from the PlayStation Store.
Players should note that any previously purchased video content can still be played on demand via PS4, PS5 and mobile devices, but the ability to make new purchases will disappear.
With the PlayStation console, players can access various streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, And more. In addition to being able to access video streaming services outside of the console, this also makes the selection of video content on the PlayStation Store strange, strictly offering sales and rentals, while other services offer subscription or advertising-based options. Sony did not try to compete with other services through the development of video content products, but chose to stop further sales and leases through the PlayStation Store.
It is not clear how many players are using PlayStation video Other options in the PlayStation Store, but because Sony chose to close the service, it is obvious that the audience is insufficient to continue to maintain the video content library for the player to use other media options for purchase. It is unclear whether any newly released movies or TV shows will enter the PlayStation Store video section in the next six months, causing sales to cease, or whether the catalog of available content has been stagnated until August 31 until it becomes permanent shut down. Similarly, in the foreseeable future, owners can still watch all content purchased before August 31, 2021, on demand.
