That Neo surface, Microsoft’s dual screen PC running a new operating system called Windows 10X, will miss the planned release date on the 2020 holiday, according to reports from ZDNet and CNBC. The company is said to have shifted its focus to making Windows 10X run well on single screen devices such as laptops and 2-in-1.
That Surface Duo, the two-screen Android phone that Microsoft announced with Neo last year, doesn’t seem to have been affected so far. However, dual screens or PCs can be folded, as planned models Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, reportedly could not be launched this year with Windows 10X, which is likely to mark a major setback for the form factor.
Microsoft until now only talked about Windows 10X in the context of two screens and folding computersbut leaked soon after it was announced suggest a slim OS will come to laptops too. While there are no reports that directly say that the Surface Neo delay is caused by the coronavirus pandemic, ZDNet notes that changes to Microsoft’s plan reflect “a new world where virtualization and single screen devices are more priority than new form factors.”
